Well, at least it isn't teaching you how to groom/condition your new anime step-sister into being your sex slave...

Why'd they remove it? I want a Canadian version and romance a hot girl while doing taxes.

Though given it's Valve and their idiotic verification process has been pretty anti-anime, it may be that again or the Social Security number risk.

One of those situations where I can't tell if it's meant to be genuine (in a cheesy, lighthearted way), silly (like some nonsense shitpost), or deceptive (a la Doki Doki Literature Club).

This is obviously the work of the Tax company lobby. If everyone knew you can file your taxes easily and for free, the Tax company industry lose a lot money.

Why does this make sense.

Except it never asks you to add your real credentials like SSN in game, let alone no person in right mind even suppose to do that in first place.

Of course it probably can be because of that - but if it's just that, it's just hilarious.

As a paid taxpreparer for 43 years, I find this quite amusing. This reminds of the days when people used TurboTax to do their own taxes. It would ask you questions that you would answer and it would show the immediate results of increasing or decreasing your refund. People would then change their answer to make their refund go up even though they answered incorrectly.

I can just see this redheaded taxpreparer asking questions and then you going back to your save point and changing your answers.

As TurboTax says, "You can spend your time NOT doing taxes." Just let that redheaded character do your returns for you. Laughing

The promotional video very clearly and absolutely unmistakably showed Iris asking for the player to enter their SSN.

That doesn't mean the game will check if it is the actual SSN of the player or just random digits, because SSN can be easily generated as just any random 9-digit number.

And like I say, no person in their right state of mind even suppose to go with choosing the real one in the first place - even if the game itself is not collecting info.

I wish it was hilarious. But the thing is, many people will actually put in real data and a malignant company could use that fact as a means to "consensually" collect personal information from fools.

For Valve, the safest measure (both for them and the users) is to just draw the line here. I don't think this game is malignant, as it looks too good to be a cheap scam, but practice did prove that simplest measures are the best.

Right. People are going to enter a fake SSN into a program that will file your taxes.

(Narrator voice: You can't file taxes without a real SSN.)

My friend, spamming and scamming are booming industries precisely because people will do dipstuff things like reveal personal information when and where they shouldn't.

I think this visual novel will be an offline program that prints out a bunch of forms that you send to the IRS on your own, so the developers won't have access to your personal information.

It sounds interesting, but it only handles "simple W-2 income" and "does not support state returns". While I'm fortunate to not have to file a state tax return, I do need to file both Schedule C and Schedule B. If the developers get serious and turn this into a fully-featured tax-preparation program inside a visual novel wrapper, I might check it out.
