Oshii: When adapting from a source material, try and avoid all contact with the original creator.

Then Miyazaki, Otomo, and Inoue all failed the lesson at least once. Also, this is the kinda thing Anno would probably do considering what happened with Kare Kano.

*Gasp* I had no idea Mamoru Oshii directed Jin Roh and Blood: The Last Vampire Shocked I thought he was the producer for those movies

Edit: Note to self, a simple google search would suffice before posting lol

The course consists of 5 hours of watching paint dry, while occasionally a basset hound will walk in and out of the room.

He didn't, he wrote them.

Thank you. I had an inkling Jin Roh was directed by the same director as A Letter to Momo, since the animation style resemble each other, but when I read "director Mamoru" and the list of projects, it threw me off lol

IMO, he's right.

While anime adaptation can be almost its own thing (like 90s Sailor Moon), most people expect something that will properly follow the source material (although, 1:1 adaptations usually aren't ideal without some anime only content because of pacing), it should still shine on its own, and have its own identity, which is hard to do if original creator is always around to "help", without having much knowledge of how anime, and manga are different mediums.

In the end they are just in the way.

One great example are episodes of Naruto series directed by Hiroyuki Yamashita.
