I'm on Chapter 8 so far and I have thoroughly enjoyed this iteration of Fire Emblem. I'm moving at a snails pace as I keep going back to the home base and I keep going after skirmishes. I ended up naming the main character Mirage because the game gives me the most TMS vibes out of any other in the franchise. I love flashy anime hair, so I'm a fan of Alear's character design. Overall I find the updates to the combat to be stellar. The characters are fun and the story while simple, is enjoyable to view.

I'm generally loving the gameplay, and finding the rest either groanworthy or unpolished. A lot of the features feel like they weren't tested or adjusted, and the writing (at least for the main scenario,) has been passable, at its best. Supports may be better- I've only gone through a small portion of them, and while most of those have been forgettable, I may be missing good ones.

I find this a nice step up from Three Houses. Not as good as Awakening/Fates, but a bit of a return to form.

As someone who very much disliked Three Houses, I'm enjoying Engage a fair amount. The story is pretty dumb, but the writing is corny enough to be funny.

I just like that its easier to play compared to Three Houses. The mechanics are more straight forward. No weapon durability or keys to open chests(unless that changes?). The UI is easy to understand and the font in handheld is actually large & readable this time. The strategy environments are more clear to navigate, not as drab looking. Sometimes more simple is better to me. I don't even mind the story being more simple.

I can't even think about the game without having an anxiety attack over it. I've ragged on the character designs from day 1, and I still find them horrid.

I'm doing my best to disengage from the game, but everyone I know is playing it.

Not sure why people have beef with the character designs. They look so much more unique and varied compared to Three Houses. Takes us back to the good old days of Fire Emblem.

Game's fun so far, but I had to acquire it through other means since some bonehead at NoA decided to remove out the gay marriage in the English version and I refuse to support that nonsense. Can't believe that's still happening in 2023.

Those two mechanics are actually old school elements that preceded Three Houses. So if you didn’t like them there you’re not going to like them in the much older games.

Now reclassed as Qi Adepts, these units not only have the option of using staves to heal (or whatever else staves do, like illuminate dark areas or set up impassable obstacles) but also use martial arts to defend themselves.

I remember once getting criticized for pointing out in Awakening (or Fates) forget which how dumb it was to still have healers who can’t fight back and who can only gain experience from healing another character which sometimes requires them to be put in reach of enemy.

Nice to know they’ve finally seem to come around.

I became familiar with Fire Emblem Engage character designer Mika Pikazo's work back in 2017 with her character design for Kaguya Luna, who along with Kizuna AI (2016), Mirai Akai (2017), Dennou Shoujo Siro (2017), and Noja Loli Kitsunemusume (2017; one of the first babiniku VTubers) - comprised the first generation VTubers in Japan who spawned the current global VTuber boom.

At this time, Kaguya Luna is no longer active as a VTuber. These days, the woman who voiced her is concentrating on her earlier Pmaru-sama. (P丸様。) YouTube utaite channel (2016).

A number of real-life YouTubers and Twitch streamers have gone VTuber, such as American singer and voice actress Amanda LEE aka AmaLee, and Australian voice actress Shū UCHIDA (e.g., Mia Taylor in Love Live!).

Yeah, voice actors in the voice acting industry in Japan today are required to be able to sing and dance, or they won't go very far in that highly competitive field. I think older veteran voice actors are given a pass if they can't sing and dance. But if you're a young, aspiring voice actor in contemporary Japan, you're expected to sing and dance. You don't have to be the greatest singer and dancer in the world. It's the idolization of the voice actor in Japan, because in large part Japanese fans demand it and most Japanese anime titles today, which used to make a profit off of DVD and Blu-ray sales, due to anime streaming, instead make money by selling recordings of voice actor songs, voice actor live events, voice actor live performances, etc.

This idolization has spread to VTubers, not only inside Japan, but in this particular case, also outside of Japan.

Several days ago, hololive-JP VTuber Hoshimachi Suisei blew a lot of people away, including many who aren't VTuber fans, with an amazing performance of her song Steller Stellar on THE FIRST TAKE, a Sony YouTube channel in which singers are given an opportunity to record one song in one take.

It can be argued that the world's first true VTuber is Ami Yamato. A Japanese national born in Japan who grew up in both Japan and the UK, London-based Yamato debuted June 13, 2011 on YouTube donning a virtual avatar. (To this day, I have no idea what the bilingual Ami Yamato looks like in real life.)

Mika Pikazo's artwork has often been featured on Japanese future core artist PSYQUI's music videos.

Pikazo designed hololive-EN VTuber Hakos Baelz.

Hololive-EN VTuber Takanashi Kiara has been streaming playing Fire Emblem Engage with Alear-colored hair.

EDITED because I got Ami Yamato debut as a virtual YouTuber wrong.

What?

Yes.

I follow more than just anime and video games.

Love 'em or hate 'em...Mika Pikazo character designs are rather unique.

Somebody desperately needs to coordinate better. It shouldn't be that hard to make a Fire Emblem where both story and gameplay are finely crafted, rather than having to weigh Koei-Tecmo's obsession with tedious micromanagement with Maeda and Komuro's inability to develop a compelling narrative and characters that aren't embarrassing to look at.

I generally quite like all the artwork I've seen from Mika Pikazo, with some character designs like Kaguya Luna being quite iconic. But I can't help but shudder when I see these Engage protagonists. The Colgate hair is incredibly gross looking. Usually with outlandish anime hair I can kind of get what the intention is for conveying the character's personality and whatnot, but this is an instance where it just feels garish and amateur.

Are we including the the latter half of the series that features busty ninjas, clumsy ninja maids, half human half dragons that look like prepubescent girls wearing next to nothing , and female characters with twintails written to be Tsunderes?

Just curious remembering how up in arms people got over Fates slightly toning down certain fanservice elements from the original release. While also remembering how the fanservice is what kept the series from being locked away ala F-Zero. So if you take that out…..
