This is one of the reasons people pirate manga. Outside of Shonen Jump/Viz, the rest of the digital manga platforms have just shit the bed.

The article title mentions "other platforms", and Azuki's statement that it affects all platforms, but it seems there's no confirmation yet that it actually does affect other platforms, e.g. Crunchyroll? It would certainly make Crunchyroll's barely notable manga section even more sparse.

Kodansha suddenly stopped the simulpub of Grand Blue Dreaming and yanked all chapters (except from Kindle, where you can still buy the individual chapters, but there are no new chapters) in June or July last year without warning. I guess they are done with the whole simulpub thing now, or are at least done with giving them out to subscription services. At least a warning is being given this time.

Don't know if Kodansha Comics is the one doing this or its their parent co Kodansha Japan doing this and telling all their subscription based outlets that they're moving away on the subscription outlets

Yeah, Shueisha has gotten really good at the whole simulpub chapter business since late 2018 and continue to grow even more later this year. I wonder if this means that Kodansha Comics will develop their own subscription outlet to compete with Viz or do what the Japanese businesses do and start the coin chapters business (hopefully not in a stupid way that Square Enix and their ticket/coin/xp way of things are done)

Besides pirating current chapters, people also pirate due to the series is oop (and will not come back) or not licensed in their country (if it will ever get licensed) and thats at fault through both the business side of things (printing, logistics, up-to-date translation, etc) and when the oversea licensure doesn't go through the terms that the Japanese licensure sets out.

Guess I'll just pirate Kodansha only! Piracy is a service issue. I'll never pirate Shueisha manga because the vast majority is on the shonen jump app for cheap prices.

Damn it Kodansha, let people read simulpubs if they want to!

Meanwhile at Shueisha: Starting 2023, all new Shonen Jump+ App series will be officially translated and simulpublished at MANGA Plus. This will apply to all new serials starting from January onward, excluding indie works, which will receive an immediate English translation

That’s fine, but I better not ever hear anyone from Kodansha complain about piracy hurting the industry.

SMH and then these companies wonder why people pirate. Anime and Manga piracy will never die as long as these companies choose to make these things inaccessible for most people.

So y'all know, there are 6 pages of results for Kodansha titles on Azuki (representing, i think, 171 series if I counted right?) and this lists just 11 series that will no longer be simulpubbed there. It's a little hasty to write off Kodansha for whatever brought this decision on.

Yeah, this only applies to simulpubbed chapters; Kodansha has a lot of their backlog available on services like Azuki and Manga Planet. Then again, they seem to only make available volumes that were published circa some time in 2021, minus two. So, you can never read a complete series from Kodansha on these services without needing to buy at least two volumes elsewhere, and anything ongoing is a few years behind. That's nothing new, but it is annoying. At least they frequently put their digital volumes on sale... though again, usually excluding the most recent volumes.

So are we getting an English version of their simulpub app Manga Pocket then? Or are they going to just mindlessly spout PR and never say anything because they don't want to communicate with fans?

I wouldn't be surprised if Kodansha is preparing their own online manga service via app + website in an effort to bring everything into one destination, and that this is the beginning of that.
