I have to ask, not sure if someone will answer, but is this movie a crossover with characters from both shows?

Compilation films are an odd anime "genre" that still seems to be running. It makes more sense to air air these films as tv specials or stream them online instead going through the trouble of airing them in theatres.

Gotta reintroduce everyone to the casts so it makes sense, especially since the Gridman anime is almost 5 years old.

I remember watching Gridman Universe on an overseas United Airlines flight over a year ago thinking, "oh neat, I wonder if this will pop up on CR soon." Cut to a year later haha
Glad it's finally going to be legally available, and I hope dubbed options aren't too far behind as well
