I don't know how to feel about this era of otaku entertainment defined by gacha and V-Tubers.

It makes me feel old to be honest.

I still am not sure of what a V-Tuber exactly is to be frank.

Does general "vtubers" count as a fandom? I was always under the impression that people were fans of specific vtubers or even a company

Basically, it's someone who streams while using a 2D avatar animated via tracking software.
It's all around weird.

I know how I feel, and it's not very positive.

It's fun when you realize you're officially old, because you just do not understand something those damn kids are into.

Well, they basically are - but the competition is quite big even between the companies because of how oversaturated the market is, and even some indies are very recognizable. The same goes for the doujin markets for them - it just doesn't deviate to where a certain Vtuber belongs, and pull them all at the same place.

Nah, it ain't weird - it's basically the technology applied to the same Youtuber culture we had in years way before that, where people just followed the personalities they like in general. And before that, we just had media personalities and idols to follow.

The gacha bit is understandable and no one should be happy about it.
VTubers seem like a logical evolution to the shift of entertainment creation to Internet Personalities. However, my concerns are about the parasocial relationships with the audience in front of the camera and the idol industry aspects behind it.
But yeah, I can see why people might ship V-Tubers. They'll ship anyone.

^The V-tubers themselves (or at least the marketing teams behind them) certainly like to encourage shipping too. It's pretty common for corporate streamers to have "has a crush on [Other vtuber from the same company] built into their overall persona, and will often do collab streams or social media posts mentioning it. I don't even follow any vtubers and I know that - at least for a while - the redhead phoenix one's gimmick was all about being obsessively in love with the pink grim reaper one that can't rap to save her life.

I'm fine with Vtubers way more than gacha, gacha can bankrupt you easily; Vtubers shouldn't bankrupt the average viewer who just pays 5-10 a month to support them and maybe get a few items of merch every now and then.

Nah, VTubers can also bankrupt you easily - it's actually the very same case of uncontrolled spending and compulsive purchase behaviours, but it's not apply to just VTubers in general and it's basically same as to spend money on idols. (And ironically, gacha games and VTubers can easily interject with each other with collabs and promotions - like just recently Counterside revealed hololiveEN collab).
Actually, same goes to the gacha players - while killer whales certainly exist, they are usually a very small minority of actual player base (especially with how much the game leaning to PVP aspect, which can affect the compulsive behaviour even more), and most of the gacha players not pay at all or pay very small sums, about the same 5-10 bucks per month.

Not exactly a surprise. Although, in a sense it's an unfair contest, because "Vtubers" are not a single franchise in the sense of Idolmaster, Fate, etc. There's multiple large agencies and freelancers and so on, doing all kinds of different unrelated things. This is kinda like saying Twitch is more popular than Fortnite.
