I know there's a lot of jokes and memes going around at the moment about the CSM fanbase failing to grasp the ridiculously unsubtle themes of the manga, but wow, what better way to tell people you completely misunderstood the point of that scene than with a horny figurine.
I guess we should expect the 'bath' version in a few months' time

And what exactly was the 'point' of that scene?

My guy or lady, it's just a figure. No need to think so deep.

That attempting to sexualize someone you have no rooted connection to based on purely on physical wants rather than genuine attraction or understanding is ultimately a hollow experience that leave you feeling empty and unfulfilled. I mean a character in the following chapter basically spells that out for Denji (again, CSM isn’t big on subtlety).
Something I genuinely appreciate is that CSM used that scene to subvert audience expectations, only to slowly establish Denji & Power as one of the few truly great platonic m/f friendships to come out of a shounen title, to the extent that when a similarly intimate scene between the two occurs later on, it’s almost absurd to Denji that he would consider her in such a light. It makes a deliberate contrast between the two scenes to show how far Denji has come. I love Fujimoto for doing that.
I mean ultimately a lot of people really like Power, so buy what you like I guess. It’s just morbidly funny & more than a little tone-deaf to me that people would take a scene that was meant to gently admonish Denji for relying on primal urges over establishing genuine intimate connections, and come away with “Hell yeah! Power’s grabbing her tits like a boss!” Never underestimate the power of memetics I guess.
Then again, I am a huge Eva fan, & given how End Of had Asuka screaming about the otaku audience (framed through Shinji) for simultaneously objectifying the women of the cast while also trying to use them as an emotional crutch - only for that franchise to sell more merch than even God could keep up with, I don’t know why I’m surprised at anything anymore. Author intent holds little sway in the face of business.

You're right, I will think far less about the media I enjoy, and the subsequent creations they spawn. Thank goodness Fujimoto wasn't trying say anything with this story.

Actually, the message of CSM is so simple it's almost funny.

Nice attempt at thinking that you're being funny by being sarcastic. But the issue still remains that you are pretty much throwing a tanthrum just from this figure existing. You had to bring out a whole three-paragraph post just to express your disdain for it. You know how you can fix this issue? By literally completing ignoring the figure entirely and continuing to enjoy the story itself. You are literally acting as is this figure just being a thing completely "destroys" the actual scene or something. Sounds like a post I would see on Twitter, not here.

There are themes to CSM, but in this case, I think that scene is supposed to just kinda be a gag

Dude, he just answered a question that somebody else asked him. He even spoilered it out so you didn't have to look at it if you didn't want to. You're really going out of your way to get upset here.

Not to mention really trying to reframe me side-eyeing something as 'having a tantrum'. Saracastic, maybe, but I'm definitely not the one seething here. I got talk about the moment where the CSM manga clicked for me & I went "Ahh, I think I see where this story is going". That was a fun experience. That I can do that while also sighing at how daft the figurine is in context is also its own separate kind of joy

The whole 'Anno hates otaku' thing is misinformation that gets spread around alot akin to the "anime was a mistake" Miyazaki quote. If you look at what Anno himself actually says and does it becomes very apparent he himself is a huge otaku and pervert. Anno plastered the covers of his Groundwork of Evangelion artbooks with multiple drawings of Rei and Asuka posing nude. He has zero problems with people sexualizing the female characters in Evangelion. Anno would go on to work on projects like Cutie Honey and Gunbuster. He is not a prude in any sense of the word. And his open admittance of being an otaku for things like Godzilla and Kamen Rider to the point he finally got his dream of directing some movies of those franchises.
There's an interesting quote from Anno himself that might help explain things
Anno: I feel that otaku have already become common to all countries. In Europe, in Korea, in Taiwan, in Hong Kong, in America, otaku really do not change. I think that this is amazing. I say critical things towards otaku, but I don't reject them. I only say that we should take a step back and be self-conscious about these things. I think it's perfectly fine so long as you act with an awareness of what you are doing, self-conscious and cognizant of the current situation. I'm just not sure it's a good thing to reach the point where you cut yourself off from society. I don't understand the greatness of society, either. So I have no intention of going so far as to call for people to give up otaku-like things and become more suited to society. Only, I think there are many other interesting things in the world, and we don't have to reject them.
However, I take offense when otaku are criticized by non-otaku. Stupid idiots, I think, [criticizing] though you don't understand anything (laughs). There are truly many people who don't seem to really understand. I know these things without being lectured to by these people. It's like, why now? But saying those things is still better. There are many who completely missed the mark. When people don't even try to understand speak about otaku as though they were far above them, I think: what stupid people."
The only thing Anno has ever said was don't become a shut-in hikkimori who cuts themself off from society. Being an otaku is fine. The man went to his own wedding cosplaying as Kamen Rider 1. He's the very definition of otaku.
---
Regardless whatever message CSM may be saying about a specific character in-universe, people can easily find an scene of a woman groping herself while posing in skimpy clothing attractive. Fujimoto is not a prude either as they love drawing sexy women and art. What is being said about Denji and his character does not have to apply to us as readers. I hope this is not a sign that we'll see people saying Fujimoto hates otaku in 10 years time.
