"Due to COVID-19"
What a bunch of liars the committee is, if it was truly because of COVID they wouldn't have to *only* animate using in-house animators, like Ippei Ichii suggests in his tweet (https://twitter.com/IchiiIppei/status/1563711002994040832); he was supposed to direct episode 10, but since they had no animation staff for the episode yet (it would've aired in 3 weeks!!), he quit

Well that's a bummer, I actually really like this show, it sucks that it has so shitty committee...

Anime industry taking a cue from the gaming industry. Don't have to admit to production failure if you say the magic words "Covid 19".

An interesting quote. It could be interpreted, with the knowledge that most shows will have a group of core hired animators for key framing and controlling the episode, that their core staff where all off sick. It is very easy to draw conclusions from translated text that arnt their, as inferences of english might or might not exist in Japanese and vice versa.

I would say that not scheduling well enough to hire local animators for their core team is a possible interpretation as well.

You conclude that all animators are in house. I am highly doubtful, but an episode production couldnt function without its main key framers and quality checkers. Now I am not saying they didn't have production problems. I am just saying that the tweet is likely talking about their main team. As trying to get subcontractors doing your main skeleton work of an episode internationally is famously hard to do and fraught with faults. Just see the issues wonder egg priority had when it ran out of local animators.

However if you are right and they where only using in house animators then I imagine the 8 episode produced would look really horrible given how many people are needed for non still animation.

I do respect Sakugablog. I think its possible that even they can be wrong but I will admit that they are very likely to interpret it right. In that case it is indeed quite a thing. Its unheard of these days for anyone outside of kyoto animation to handle all production in house. And even kyoto sometimes has external inbetweeners.

They are not a primary source though. Just another speculator like us.

Its just such a stupendously bad situation to be in that I cant help doubting it. Hell if its confirmed then that makes the season basically a failed project.

There is another possible interpretation I didn't mention before. That the studio is not using external directors anymore.

The open parts to interpretation are:
-animation staff from "the animation staff was still zero" is it referring to internal, external but inside Japan staff or external to the country staff?
- "only in-house staff will proceed." proceed as in direct the episode, organise the episode, key frame the episode, all the extra core tasks like backgrounds and supervision, or the entire animation process?

It does state that him as an external to the studio director was running storyboarding and dubbing.

Isn't he the same animator underpaid by Netflix/Mappa (Yasuke)? Also, why are there no animation staffs?

It's mainly referring to main animation staff, not saying that everything like in-betweens is being done in house (doing all the in-betweens in-house for such a small team is impossible without a lot more time or significantly less inbetweens). More referring to the keys and animation directors most likely.

He is. Also we don't know. The committee might not want to spend outsourcing money, the team might not want to do outsourcing for fear of quality (Psycho-Pass's director once commented on some outsourcing for an episode being so bad they had to correct the entire episode anyway), or maybe they don't have the money, or maybe they don't have the connections (though I doubt this since RWBY #9 was thriving off of 85% Twitter animators). There's a lot of reasons it could be

But of course, one of the main issues is the scheduling itself. The committee didn't schedule the show very well and now it's suffering the consequences.

This IS a Netflix anime right?

I'm not an insider to the Japanese animation industry, but doesn't a tie-up with Netflix imply interference in how a regular show would be created and produced compared to a non-Netflix production? If there is interference, it would not surprise me if the Netflix contractual terms had a part in the mess the show finds itself in.

Based on previous netflix anime they just acquire the overseas license from a production committee for most anime. Even as far back as knights of sidonia it was still produced and aired in Japan and later put on netflix after translation and their team determining the timing. Isekai old guy was also a production committee work and was airing in Japan 2 weeks earlier then netflix until production problems.

Assuming it is based on previous production contracts.

I seem to recall reading on this website how Netflix's entry into the Japanese animation production market really rocked the boat, because of the funding and global exposure they brought when they tie-up with a particular offering. Probably not in this case, so either the production committee really blundered with their logistics, or the animators are telling the truth and the pandemic has really floored all of their designated staff.

Edit: Looking at the production credits, the animation studio Aterlier PontDarc does not have any previous experience with projects, this work is its maiden outing. Perhaps inexperience compared to more established peers being a factor here?

And the funniest nonsense to that pile of cursed production is that Netflix actually had simulcasted the show everywhere except the NA at the same time as it aired, but now it got delayed even the subtitles for the show too from the already produced episode 7.
