It's hard to overstate just how much Film: Red has outperformed past One Piece films in the Japanese domestic market:
  • It had the second biggest opening day and weekend of all time (everything will play second fiddle to Kimetsu no Yaiba regarding #1 records)
  • It outperformed the franchise's previous highest grossing film, Film: Z, in just 10 days.
  • It is currently on track to be the highest grossing film for 2022. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 finished with a domestic box office of ¥13.8B while Film: Red is targeting ¥15B+ (more than double Film: Z)
  • it did so despite it being over a decade since the peak of its annual manga sales and a locked in sales trend of declining sales
  • It did so despite technically being a (mostly) non-canon film.

While there's multiple reasons as to why its performing so well, the main reason is the partnership with Ado and popular and talented musical artists to provide songs for the film. From what I've seen, the songs have been very well received.

The film's success at the box office has also had some effects on the manga sales with One Piece outperforming itself compared to past years; nothing outrageous but enough to say that it's definitely beating the sales trend.

It's a pretty good movie that tried new things. You may like or dislike it, but "mediocre" is hardly the term.

I don't think you are too familiar with One Piece films (or longrunning shounen movies in general). Most of them ARE mediocre and make mad money. And this is one of, if not the best, no wonder it will perform far better.

They mostly sell for being compact filler fun, nobody in Japan really expects much in quality from longrunning shounen movies ever since Dragon Ball's own mediocre movies.

If you want good ones, you will go for movies that adapt part of a canon instead (usually not from longrunner series anyway).

The film isn´t well-liked in Japan and the first post Strong World movie to legit divide the fanbase but still reached 100 million and counting. Is it the musical aspect or is the IP on random high again?

It's not that the movie wasn't well-liked in Japan, it just got review bombed in places like Yahoo Japan because this Ado singer has a huge hatedom of toxic channers and conservatives alike in Japan.

You can read all about it in 2chan and in the reviews bombs themselves, the movie is quite well liked in Japan in terms of general audience.

Whether hatred towards an artist or the film is true or not doesn't appear to have affected its box office too much. I'm looking forward to seeing this from if only that it will provide more focus on Shanks (maybe). OP films have been guilty of showing characters in trailers, then they only show up in the movie for a cameo (Stampede did a great job of actually giving decent screentime to characters rather than have glorified cameos).

Tbh I'm not bothered about the reaction in Japan. Once it releases in the West I'll be seeing it in order to make my own mind up. If I enjoy it enough oil watch it again as well (a good way to enjoy one if my favourite stores and show my support).

So this Ado guy is like Brie Larson, then.
