I hate to admit this, but the censorship isn't even the worst part about this. I can chuckle at the absurdity of how it looks (they really need to roll out regional variants of content distribution, that said), but the issue is the fact the app/site is just filled to the brim of what I'd effectively call micro-transactions. They divide up the chapters into segments, and you pay "coins" per segment. So you don't even get a full chapter experience. You also have to buy "coins" in batches. And unless I'm remembering wrong, these are only "rental", so you don't "keep it".

It's a mess in every way possible.

This is so bad it's hilarious. Even this can't make it uncensored https://magazine.jp.square-enix.com/top/shoei/9784757555051.jpg?t=20210406161357

As for Manga Up!'s response to the whole kerfuffle, the issue stems from the fact that the app is being released worldwide outside of Japan.

Since they made that statement on twitter July 27th, there's been no new tweets from their channel. It's a new app so one would expect them to try to promote it, so I guess the fallout can be felt even there...

At least they seem to know they’re worthless by saying to go elsewhere.

At least they’re that self aware.

I wonder how long they’re gonna last.

It's never going to work if this stays. What a joke. Why even provide this service when you know this is going to happen! Awful. Just going back to buying physical and piracy.

If you can’t provide people an unaltered product, particularly from a market that traditionally demands it be unaltered, warts and all, then you’re probably better off not sinking the cash into distribution. This would be silly even if it was an optional censor.

And that’s not even getting into the other issues as noted above.

Can't they just remove the breast lines or reduce the breast size because that's how Viz Media handled the localization of the Toshihiro Ono Pokemon manga?

Considering how Square Enix has operated lately with its games, I'm not at all surprised that they would try the same thing here.

Not when the entire process is automated and is just an AI trained to detect certain line patterns, even if those patterns also happen to correlate to knees bent at certain angles.

Even Manga Up! themselves are willing to admit the obvious: If you aren't happy with the censorship, your only choice is to go somewhere else.

Luckily there are many places to go, both legal and not. No reason to deal with this garbage

It's more the legal and finance department in this case...if they want the app in countries with various strict guidelines on what's legal and the budget doesn't allow for individual implementation based on region, this is the cheapest way to get it done, lol.

I was SO ready to sign up, but this.....I'm one that likes to read these series online to try it out before buying it physically (if it's available), like a few chapters to get a feel, but if they're going this route, I'll pass without hesitation.

This app is clearly not for manga fans. Ah well.
