After six years from the pilot they're finally getting to this?

What's wild is that I can remember reading that original post but I have zero memories of that Patlabor announcement. The Pluto reveal seemed to have completely stripped it from my memory.

I would say that it makes for a welcome surprise, but that pv image certainly doesn't inspire confidence, seemingly revealing that EZY is going to be cgi with simplified and plastic designs. It's almost reminiscent of the stock motion designs of something like Rilakkuma and Kaoru, which is an incredibly weird fit for something like Patlabor. I mean it's not like Yoshiura's Reboot short for the Japan Animator Expo necessarily convinced me that Patlabor could really adapt to a modern setting (at least without taking out the core of what made the original's time & place tone work), but I'd at least have been more interested in seeing his ideas translated over to an established franchise, especially if the visuals were as lush as they were in the short.

Consider me incredibly skeptical at this point in time.

Pretty much the same goes for me. I do love Patlabor and want to be excited for something new after all these years, but the image doesn't do it for me. I just hope the entire project will have a better look.

I'm already quite satisfied with all of the Patlabor we already have (one of my all-time favorites) so I find it hard to be overly enthusiastic or overly critical here. I'm happy to see more: if it's good, great, if it ain't, fine.

As for the concept image of EZY... I think it looks really good. If Patlabor has ever been consistent about any one thing, it's punching way, way above its budget when it comes to visuals. And regardless of what you may infer about the quality of CGI from a blurry, low-resolution image... IMO the composition of that picture is beautiful. I love it.

Another legacy franchise given mediocre CGI treatment.
Excitement successfully extinguished.

The image was produced as part of a number of images created for the Patlabor Artworks exhibition at the Shibuya Marui department store from August 2021 by Teruhisa Tajima, graphic designer for pretty much all of the franchise's promotional and retail artwork since 1988. There seems to be no evidence yet if Patlabor Ezy will be CGI or hand drawn.
