Why is RWBY even on animenewsnetwork when it is not a Japanese anime but an American production, and it's CGI animation barely resembles Japanese animation styles?
I thought animenewsnetwork only allows animation from Japan to be recorded on the site since they ignore all the Chinese, Korean, etc animes that have come out even if they are a closer copy of Japanese animation? |

They're clearly talking about the main series, not Ice Queendom. I've always found that a bit strange too since they still don't have a page for Heaven Official's Blessing on this site which, despite it actually being a donghua, literally has an English dub produced by Funimation and even a Japanese dub. |

As "i exist" said, I'm talking about the main RWBY series which is basically an entirely American production using CGI animated techniques that don't even resemble standard Japanese anime very much. And even for this spin off RWBY series, there are other Korean, Taiwanese, mainland Chinese, etc animes that are made by Japanese companies but Animenewsnetwork's gate keeping for some reason has excluded them from this website so it doesn't make sense. |

Are they similarly popular, and would ANN likely have the resources (people with the necessary language competencies) to cover them? Genuine question, for what it's worth, not a counterargument. I have no idea how ANN picks their stories. Maybe it is partially news-room sourced, which would naturally bias it towards the backgrounds of whoever is in the room? An impartial 'new news' selector doesn't really exist. |

Cover them? No, they just need to create a page for the anime. They don't actually need anyone to cover the anime. The vast majority of the thousands upon housands animes listed on animenewsnetwork have never been covered by their staff. I find it strange that there is not a single anime listed on here are from Korea, mainland China, Taiwan, or any other part of Asia besides Japan. And in terms of popularity, RWBY isn't even the most popular American "anime-like" show. There are more popular stuff like the Avatar The Last AirBender series that more closely resembles Japanese animation styles and is way more popular with multiple TV shows, live action TV show, and a live action movie. But for some reason, Avatar TLB isn't listed on animenewsnetwork either. And I'm sure there has to be boat loads of non-Japanese animes from those other regions that are more popular than RWBY. Popularity doesn't really explain why RWBY is up here considering more popular American animes/anime-ish shows and popular non-American/non-Japanese animes/anime-ish shows aren't up here on this site. What goes onto Animenewsnetwork seems heavily arbitrary without any consistent set of criterias at this point. |

If the specific question is "Why does the original RWBY have an ANN Encyclopedia page?", well, I think I might have figured out the answer.
Let's start with a different question: when was that page made? Its ID is 17739, and those are assigned sequentially. 17732 is Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, which was presumably added when that anime was announced in late 2015. So RWBY was probably added shortly afterward. The Wayback Machine's archives also supports the notion that RWBY's page was added in late 2015. But RWBY started back in July 2013, more than two years before. So why was its page added when it was? Here's another clue: the very next ID, 17740, is the page for the RWBY manga adaptation, announced in October 2015. My theory, then: RWBY was added because it was getting a manga, and some encyclopedia editor figured that while they were adding a page for that, it'd make sense to have an entry for the source material too. Before then, it doesn't seem to have gotten much coverage here at all outside the novelty of its Japanese dub and the news of Monty Oum's death. So, not treated as an anime itself, but of some tangential interest to English-speaking anime fandom. (And they've still never had episode or season reviews of the series itself, just manga based on it.) |

Interesting explanation. So it all came down to a possible manga? Yeh, that would make sense to why RWBY got on this website but more popular American "anime" like shows like Avatar:The Last Airbender or the numerous other popular non-Japanese Asian anime-shows don't get listed here. |
