Looks like the Nintendo Switch has won the console wars for the time being. PlayStation 5 has been left in the dust, and the Nintendo Switch is just 2 million sales away from eclipsing the much older PlayStation 4. What hurt the PlayStation 5 much is the lack of inventory to sell. They still can't keep it in stock.

Actually the PS4 has sold 117 million units so the Switch has to sell 10 million in order to surpass it, but it'll probably reach those numbers next year easily. Still, I don't think the Switch is actually competing against the PS5, well in Japan the Switch has eclipsed both the PS4 and PS5, but in terms of the global market I think Nintendo is doing their own thing. I find it interesting that Nintendo is probably the only console manufacturer that can survive on first-party software alone, part of the reason why consoles like the Dreamcast failed was because they lost the support of big companues like EA. But the Switch situtation is interesting because it has a notable lack of third-party support despite the amount of hardware sold, even the Wii and NDS had tons of support, but aside from titles like MH: Rise, Momotaro Dentetsu, SMT V and the Project Asano games most 3rd party developers, especially Namco, SEGA and EA, had ignored the system. I don't know if it's because they didn't the Switch would be that big of a success, the weak hardware is also a reason but I think developers should design games optimized for the platform. I think the Switch will reach 130 million unites before Nintendo announces a true successor.

Not hard to see; the momentum for the Switch basically never stopped and so far there's no sign of it slowing down. And with the PS5 and Series X being so slow in gaining traction it's possible that by the time Nintendo releases their next system it's probably not going to take much time to catch up with them

Don't think the PlayStation 5 is having a traction problem, think it is an inventory availability problem. At least till now.

As much as we expect Nintendo to come out with a successor, it should stand to reason that they shouldn't let the successor become nothing more than the Switch with an added peripheral that makes the system that much more difficult to develop for. That's why the Wii U was such a failure and why we as the fandom shouldn't pressure for a new console for the sake of a new console.

Oh crap, I didn't realize the Switch already passed the Wii. And with a year to spare too! Congrats Nintendo, hope the next one, whenever it comes out (probably late-2020s) is even better.

In all fairness, the seventh generation was already going out the door by that time. The Wii U did suffer because of its inability to differentiate from the Wii for sure, but this wasn't a Dreamcast situation where they were way too ahead of the curve; the Xbox One and PS4 came out just a year later. Hell, you could almost call the Switch Nintendo's Dreamcast if the Wii U serves as a Saturn parallel, the obvious difference being Nintendo is still going strong unlike Sega.

The older generation already found their footing with the original Wii. They didn't need the Wii U as they saw the system as being redundant to a system that they were already well accustomed to. Plus, if the hardware and software continued to sell well to keep Nintendo in the black, then what did it matter if next gen consoles came out? You don't make new consoles just because your competition makes new consoles, you make new consoles when sales start to taper off and you need to come up with something innovative that puts you ahead of the pack. Even the NES had a full 10 years to its lifetime before it got retired due to the advent of 3D gaming. Fans shouldn't be pressuring industries to come out with new consoles just because it's "that time". It makes us look selfish and entitled. Industries need to come up with consoles that can have a myriad of software developed for it, wow the user, and bring in sales. The failure of the Wii U was a lesson to not only Nintendo, but to us as the fans as well.

The momentum gets dinged due to the chip shortages - Switch dropped 20% the past year, and Nintendo forecasts it'll further lower from 23 million to 20 million this coming year

PS5 got dinged too from 14.8 million to 11.5 million

Though due in large part to the easier-to-manufacture Series S, Xbox has actually gained global marketshare the last 2 quarters

I don’t think “we” want a new console for the sake of wanting a new console but wanting something that’s more superior to what they already have on the market, (hopefully) doesn’t have inventory issues at no point in it’s lifetime, doesn’t have it very expensive peripherals that easily stop functioning properly (and only way upfront to play games on the system), and can natively play games on the system and at current resolutions.

How was it a lesson to us fans? not everyone bought nor had an interest in the WiiU and we sure as hell didn’t invest billions of dollars into creating and marketing the device.
