The Sonic Origin thing doesn't seem that confusing. A quick glance at that chart says if you pre-order the digital deluxe version you get everything, otherwise you have to buy the bonuses individually. DLC on launch is certainly scummy, but that's the standard these days and people will still support it. I mainly just care about the main games and don't need the bells and whistles though.

the nintendo news dont surprise me at all, it being both a videogame and a japanese company. like for a lot of jobs that's the worse you can do, the companies know people love video games and will stand the most ridiculous work conditions because of that.

There's also a new Front Mission 2089 game that's announced for multiple platforms (although only mobile was confirmed at the moment, but PC isn't out of the question either), but a worldwide release is a bad idea as Borderscape is the third 2089 game with the first two games never getting a western release and only the first 2089 being fully remade on DS in Japan, while the second is insanely abridged in the remake and is missing so much of the good parts. Also having it F2P will drive fans who were lucky enough to play even the remake away, this is not a good game to make F2P.

What bugs me about the Sonic DLC is what they are monetizing. Stuff like modernized displays and menus are pretty standard for remasters. Once again, a publisher is trying to separately sell something that was once simply included for the purchase price. And the unlocked mode for pre-ordering? That's some mobile game tactics right there. You could unlock it by playing the game, but why do that when jumping on it now gives it to you right away? In exchange for the customer not waiting for reviews or sale prices, Sega gives something that was already in the game.

The music DLC is necessary due to the insane licensing issues of Sonic 3's music, the rest should've been in the full game, especially since it's $40.

Potentially related to the article topics, my main thought with Xenoblade being moved up several months was, "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad." I'm happy for everyone that is excited, but personally I would rather the game receive two more months of polish.

Accelerated release dates are unusual enough that I don't have much of a theory here. Are they releasing early because QA is basically done, and they're satisfied? Because they need the income, pronto? The team has too much in the pipeline, so something needs to get out the door? I'm a pessimist and view things accordingly, but its hard to say with any measure of certainty. We'll find out soon, I guess. I just hope we don't have weird pseudo-gacha mechanics this time (or actual gacha obviously.)
Nintendo having scummy employment practices would not be shocking, if the allegations are true. That seems to be the rule, not the exception, for big game devs.

Christian "Taxman" Whitehead was also involved in a supportive role, as he modified the engine running Sonic 1, 2, & CD to be compatible in a collection format, while Sonic 3&K is using the latest version of the same engine, one that not even any of the decompilation-bsed fan remakes (Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 3 Air, etc.) use.
Yeah, the DLC chart was stupid, but it really does just come down to "Pay $5 extra for the Digital Deluxe Edition, which gives you everything". I'm at least hoping that the bonus music can actually be used in-game as a custom soundtrack (and, honestly, there should just be an option to do that in general, for the fun of it), and not just for a jukebox.
As for the stuff with Nintendo, I honestly wasn't surprised by it. For decades, Hiroshi Yamauchi was notoriously cutthroat as Nintendo's president, and even though Iwata was by all means a friendlier & more relatable president, as seen with him cutting his own salary so as to keep staff employed, it's easy to see that a lot of the rougher & more horrible aspects of working at Nintendo are just so ingrained into the company at large, & Iwata either didn't do much to fix what he also likely just saw as "normal", or he simply wasn't able to really do much of anything, in that regard, since it's essentially become part of the life of the company itself, sadly.

So, where to begin this week... well, I had a feeling that things at Nintendo weren't all rainbows and fairies, but I was expecting allegations of sexism to come out first, like all the other big gaming companies. Union busting a different kind of evil, but I guess it makes sense given that this is a Japanese company. I mean, we're fighting an uphill battle when it comes to unionizing anime dubs, so I'm not sure if a major push will come in the gaming industry until after that finishes. But hey, Nintendo still has a good reputation with the general gaming public, and they just dropped a glut of Splatoon 3 news, including a release date! They're gonna be fine...
Tangentially related to the Sega news, which is LOL (don't have an opinion on Sonic Origins, but it did take me until now to realize that everything comes with the Digital Deluxe edition... assuming if you pre-order it), I'm surprised I haven't seen a news article here talking about how The iDOLM@STER Poplinks is going to be shutting down after just a year and a half. Yup, not even a triple-A franchise like iM@S is safe from a mobile game with a short lifespan. I think the paranoia some fans (like me) might've had that it wouldn't last ended up sealing its fate quicker.
And I thought Heidi was the one doing the Gotta Protectors review? Either way, keep up the good work.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles has had a barebones version on steam for years now. People should just buy that instead of this terrible cashgrab by Sega.

You coming through with a new PC or Steamdeck for us poor folk master man?

I was hoping that the disastrous launch of Babylon's Fall would make suits across the industry reconsider going all-in on live-service and microtransactions, |
If one failure could make companies reassess things the video game industry would be dead. I mean Nintendo didn’t look at the failure of THQ’s uDraw tablet and think to themselves “hmmmm that sucked I guess we better not make a tablet a primary controller for our new successor to the Wii”.
Apparently the reason for that is the uDraw was apparently successful on the Wii it was the PS3 & Xbox 360 versions that sucked.

Yeah if we overlook the studio that did the CG in the first movie going out of business. As long as these companies have money to burn on this stuff and so long as they have stu-er generous people willing to give them money for it, this is going to continue on across the board.

Hey, remember when Electronic Arts cancelled former Naughty Dog scribe Amy Hennig's single-player Star Wars adventure game? They might be regretting that very soon, |
She hasn’t wrote or directed anything good since Uncharted 2…..all the way back in 2009.

Xenoblade 3: I imagine the game would have been done regardless of it's launch date being moved up or not. Nintendo has been known to sit on completed games, waiting for the right time to release them.
The Sonic DLC is pretty egregious. At a $5 difference between the standard and deluxe, they should have just set it to $45 and leave it at that if that's how much they wanted to take in for the content. Charging for things like menu animations is ridiculous. It might have received complaints about the price, but I can't imagine it'd be as negative with the chart reaction and looking like they're trying to nickel and dime everyone.

The music DLC is reportedly just for music from other games (3D Blast, Spinball etc), so it has nothing to do with Sonic 3 (even if it did, that cost should be absorbed in the base price). Though that should be included as well as a bonus imo, at least that's the only justifiable DLC on that chart.

Come on, you don't need anything close to a new PC to run the Genesis collection

I know this especially as I still have my old PS3 and a New 3DS along with access to a Xbox One which still has my copy of Sonic 3 which I downloaded years ago on Xbox 360 I even have the original Sonic 3 on my SNES Classic. The snark was mostly because the PC was specifically mentioned
I also hopefully will have a new gaming laptop before the end of year and will need something on it.

This. The autumn release window was probably designed to give them some wiggle-room for COVID-related delays... and/or they wanted to shuffle some other releases around. Nintendo likes to have a steady stream of games, so moving XC3 to later summer probably means there's another comparably big release lined up for late autumn/winter.
