NEWS: Tatami Time Machine Blues Anime's Theatrical Screenings Start on September 30

I still don't get how they get away with calling it "inspired" by the stage show. It IS the plot of the stage show, which was adapted into a hilarious live action movie and the plot described in this article plot IS the plot of the original.

It's like The Hensons taking complete credit for The Muppets Christmas Carol.

No, it's not "inspired" by Summer-Time Machine Blues, it's "based on" Summer-Time Machine Blues. It's a completely derivative work.

Except, in the case of Christmas Carol, we're talking a public domain story and there's no problem with a modern author taking credit for a derivative work.
Ueda better be one hell of a friend to be giving up the lion's share of the credit of his story here. Unless the articles are misconstruing how much credit is being given to the original author- lawsuits could be coming.

Ueda himself is the scriptwirter for this anime, and he also wrote the scripts for both the anime adaptations of Tatami Galaxy and Night is Short. He's obviously not going to sue.

You are right that it's more than just "inspired" by the stage play though. Having actually read the book I would more so call it an adaptation. It's also not really a sequel to Tatami Galaxy.
