Agreed. Putting aside those who might get worked up over hearing the word "Republican" in any context, this series shouldn't be given to people under 18. |
A logical school wouldn't put books on shelves without doing their own review process and noting that the books do have age ratings on the back spines It seems like a nonissue. |
Okay. So we are in agreement then?

Ideally, that decision should lie with school librarians and not the state. A good librarian has a ton of resources to draw from these days, including for graphic novels. Punishing a book vendor because of some mature titles they carry (and which librarians do not have to buy) is definitely overkill.
At any rate, the other books they're banning are probably the bigger issue. Given the mention of Gender Queer, imagine if they'd said Our Dreams at Dusk or My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness instead of Goblin Slayer. |
I thought Lesbian experience is autobiographical at least, so I could see an argument made for putting it as allowable as nonfiction.

I mean while that is somewhat reasonable the problem with this logic is that some people seem to ignore the fact that kids under the age of 18 are generally going to become aware of things like sex and violence before they turn 18. Either through first hand experience or second hand accounts or a third party witness.
But even more bizarre some of these same people are fine with the idea of teaching or putting the Bible on school shelves despite some “issues” with said book. |
I agree. And those kids under 18 can go seek out this material in places that aren't a public school library.

Search for "children exposure to pornography".

Gender Queer seems to be a memoir as well, according to the news story. Maus is also nonfiction, and Republicans had no issue going after that either.

I really can't believe someone would actually put goblin slayer on a school shelf knowing what's in it. Either he's lying or someone really f'd up

Somehow I won't be surprised if GOP states likes Texas and Florida will ban animes and mangas/LN's with fan service and/or ecchi. I wonder if Republicans saw "My Dress-Up Darling" and reacted horribly that it contains fan service and ecchi, and the female MC in it is an underage. I imagine they are shocked and condemned.

and thats why age rating shouldnt matter n any decision like this....somehow My Dress-Up Darling is rated 18+ but Monster Musume is 16+.

As the article states the real story here is him comparing the sexual violence of Goblin Slayer to the mere existence of LGBT people. The tactic is to get people to go “of course that should be banned,” and then jump on the wagon of also banning the other things he includes with it. If you attempt to refute banning of the latter he’ll go back to the content of Goblin Slayer and claim that’s what you think children should have access to since you disagreed with him. It’s important to acknowledge this in it’s entirety, because that’s his true conservative position here.

Goblin Slayer is so tame aside from the ONE (non-explicit) goblin rape scene in the anime. The light novel is extremely tame ... it always defers to "well, you can imagine what happened" as opposed to any explicit descriptions of rape. There are a scattering of somewhat ecchi (boobs) art, but nothing outrageous.

Exactly. As was mentioned in an earlier post, the publisher's own rating would at least suggest that there wasn't any real intention to put Goblin Slayer in school libraries anyway. I doubt Yen Press was actively trying to sell it to schools, and I have to imagine that school librarians aren't oblivious to a publisher's own age ratings, and would probably skip it.
This isn't coming from a place of any genuine concern.

As a long-time reader and fan of the light novel (and manga), I would personally agree that the series isn't quite appropriate for children (the manga comes close to blatant porn on occasion), doesn't offer any educational substance to children, and its depiction of women comes from a strictly horny author's perspective (he can't seem to introduce a female character to a scene without describing her boobs, butt, or longing for the main character), so I would find it inappropriate for a school library.
Still, the comparison to educational or autobiographical LGBTQ+ content in schools and the intent to go after the vendor who sold the book is very concerning and generally very frustrating.
Also, while most books are supposed to be vetted by librarians and/or schools before being added to their shelves, I can't imagine some stuff doesn't fall through the cracks due to a busy schedule or naive assumptions made about "animay cartoons" by some adults. I can't imagine even the most libertarian reviewer seriously reading the book or especially the manga and thinking, "Yeah, this is fine."

If they already ban books for obscene content then they should rather start with things like the bible. You wouldn't believe how much debauchery and violence is contained in that book. They even have bestiality in there.

When I hear something like this, my first thought is "What school had this book in their library?", and my next thought is "Did a school have this book in their library, or is the politician using this book as a severe example of what children shouldn't read, as well as a reason to ban more books/manga in general as a scapegoat?" It wouldn't be surprising using this as a new front of the culture wars if enough people took a look at this.

I imagine if any schools did carry Goblin Slayer they probably restrict it to 18 year old seniors only but more likely he's just using this as an excuse to ban LGBTQIA+ books and no schools actually carry Goblin Slayer in their libraries.
