Not surprised that they handled it this way. Sponsors/partners might not approve of the type of content, and there is also the problem that Nijisanji requests permission from copyright holders prior to streams. Obviously, none of this is content he would have streamed, but considering how hard some Japanese companies come down on copyright issues, it could cause an overreaction where those permissions are at risk. The result: a quick suspension and apology to save face.

It's a joke based on the "you wouldn't steal a movie" line from old anti piracy ads.

Anyway I went into this thinking he'd have like child porn or something but sounds like it was just the fact it wasn't purchased that was the problem. I can understand why Niji is not happy w/ it tho. The search of everyone's computers for compliance may unearth some issues perhaps.

Somewhat wrong, the correct quote is "You Wouldn't Steal a Car".

Also, lesson learned, keep your work equipment separate...

Yeah sorry! Been a long time since I saw one of those ads. My brain is still in the "You wouldn't shoot a policeman. And then steal his helmet. You wouldn't go to the toilet in his helmet. And then send it to the policeman's grieving widow. And then steal it again!" mindframe.

ok unless this pornographic material consisted of content that IS illegal like child porn or hurt core or something of that nature, Then fine he gets whats coming to him. but this is a case of him just having porn that he didn't pay for that he is well with in his legal rights to see and own? How dare they insinuate that its content deemed illlegal then?

This makes no sence and it just seems like there sticking it to him for no reason and calling it "Copyright" pft. Yeah right because they found porn on a computer. 98% of the world watches porn for free and gets it through many other means instead of purchasing it.

Yeah but it's illegal to watch it without paying unless it's offered for free. This wasn't offered for free, you had to pay for it. That's why they said it's illegal. The content itself isn't illegal, it's how he obtained it.
It's like if you stole a book from a book shop. The book itself is not illegal content, but the method in which you obtained it is illegal.
Doesn't matter if 98% of the world watches porn for free. That just means 98% of the world is breaking the law. And as with any broken law, if you get caught you get in trouble, which is what happened here. No one is within their legal rights to see and own something they obtained illegally.

It makes total sense.

Talk about an overreaction, while the punishment was light, a verbal warning would've been a better option. It's a reminder for Vtubers to have dedicated external drives for warez, roms, and the like.

Reminds me of the time Funimation was caught using an infamous ripping group's subs(identified by the typesetting applied on them as the subs themselves were still the official ones) in the dubbing room when they were doing a documentary. The ANN link/story is for some reason missing/invalid(?), but you can read the whole story here(Torrentfreak).

You have to keep in mind this is Japan and they have stricter laws than the West on this sort of thing. The vtuber in question didn't have anything offensive, just regular porn, that he didn't buy but torrent/downloaded which is a big no-no. This is the same country that gives people jail and/or fines if they have manga illegally.

It doesn't have to make sense but that's how Japan is. It's no different than the weird laws in other countries.
