The voters hate anime, and Hosoda was lucky to get in with Mirai.

Considering what they have been lately? That is a good thing.

No standalone anime movie was worthy for a nomination. Especially Belle, god that movie was so stupid, I swear. Thiough, if we count sequels of the TV shows, it's a different thing.

But Spirited Away won the Oscar in 2002, although to be fair with the exception of Lilo & Stitch 2002 wasn't a great year for animated movies. But now that I think about it, Spirited Away came out in 2001 in Japan. Just because it came out in 2002 in the U.S. made it eligible for that year's awards? |

Happy Science always tries to get its movie nominated by the Oscars. All they need to do to be eligible in the first place is get it to run in a theater in Hollywood for a weekend, or something like that. It's embarrassingly easy for a film to be eligible for the Oscars, with the only really prohibitive thing being the costs to get that run in Hollywood, in the first place. |

None of the ones released were strong enough to be contenders.

Josee or Evangelion should have been nominated and won

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 was not eligible for this year's Oscars, possibly due to this eligibility rule:

I think it was very obvious that oscar voters don't like anime.
To be fair though the nominations for best animated feature isn't bad. Encanto, Flee, Luca, The Mitchells vs the Machines, Raya and the last Dragon are all great animated movies. It is a little annoying that 3 of them are owned by the same company but what can you do, In terms of anime movies that are pretty good, I guess Belle and Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 would be good choices but didn't get nominated. The problem with Evangelion is that it is a franchise and oscars are also very picky against that. Belle i'm not entirely sure why that didn't get nominated considering how many critics loved it. |

I'm going to be honest, I loved Eva and I think the final movie was okay but there is ALOT of baggage that goes along with that film. Putting aside the Oscar rules, the level of meta commentary in that film requires that you be thoroughly familiar with both Eva and it's fandom. If you aren't familiar with both those things, alot of it is going to fall flat.

Am I surprised? No. But it's one thing to see a Hosoda film eligible, it is very different thing to see Happy Science eligible. |

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is one of my favorite movies from my childhood and came out the same time as Lilo and Spirited Away. Anyways, yes to be eligible, your movie needs a theatrical run in the US during the time frame of the awards year. |

Yeah, truly nothing was released that can compare to the caliber of previous nominations like A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and The Boss Baby. But as others have said elsewhere, it's patently obvious how little the academy regards anime, and we're basically in for a lull until Miyazaki's next film.
