I agree... there are several for racing (motorcycle, drag, car, whatever) and a few others overlap as well (bishoujo, hot girls) as well as a broad theme for sports and several for smaller sports themes (baseball, softball, badminton, wrestling, tennis, and on and on) I can see this having to be reigned in as well somehow, although I do like people getting to suggest different themes now, you never know how someone would want to look up an anime, so in a way it makes sense. I simply wouldnt want a listing cluttered up by too many different themes/genres, however I can't actually say I have seen anything yet too out of control to list. |

This would be problematic for series that are not very popular. For example, the ballet theme for Swan would likely not actually get added for a very long time as no one seems to know about this [wonderful] series. Audits exist to keep things from getting out of hand, although I'll admit I'm not sure how misspellings will be taken care of--should they be handled in the audit process (i.e. discard if it's spelled wrong) or will there be some way to report them in the future? Because currently, all you can do is call for an audit. |

I have a couple questions.
First, are audits only generated if someone asked for one for that title and genre/theme? I've been getting some that I think are really obviously correct, and I would be surprised if people are asking for those specific cases to be reviewed. Is it doing something like having everything be reviewed to start out? Or is it having all of the genres and themes for a show be reviewed if someone requests an audit, rather than allowing people to specify which ones they disagree with? Also, when you do audits, should you start to show up in the contributor page? I've done a couple hundred of them, but my name doesn't show up there yet. Does the audit have to finish before you get credit for it? |

What if the reverse occurred? Someone added a genre or theme that doesn't fit at all? It would take much longer to take it from there. Better safe than sorry. The audit system essentially exposed two things: - how much power the normal user has over adding data to the system - the great amount of rubbish the editors have to deal with on a daily basis Adding genres and themes to obscure and unknown titles should be just as easy as to the popular ones but we should always consider that there are people out there who will abuse the privileges given to them. |

I think all genre and theme entries are automatically up for being audited but you'd have to make a request if you want an entry re-audited subsequently.
It takes a few days for your stats to be updated.
I think with the sports thing (and also mecha where there are also various sub-themes being added like "real robot" and such like), it might work better with sub-themes. For example, instead of having a show be listed with "sports" and "tennis" have it be listed as "sports: tennis" (or "mecha: real robot"). That way, once the themes are in alphabetical order in the search page, all the sports will be together, all the mecha will be together and so on. It will make searching a lot easier. There does need to be a way to weed out duplicate themes (bishojo / bishoujo / hot girls) and a way to get rid of inappropriate entries (of which several have been noted already) - otherwise the whole thing's going to get silly. One spammer could do tremendous damage in a very short period of time. |

That's why there are audits. To keep it from being abused. This is how the Encyclopedia works. Sometimes, incorrect information is added--and sometimes it stays there a really long time. But once someone sees it, they hit the error button, and it's corrected. On the other hand audits are going to correct those issues much faster. The new themes are going straight to audit, and while there will still be a lag with lesser known shows (because there's a smaller pool to have auditing), there's a lesser chance that these titles will be as abused because no one really knows about them in the first place. Besides, true abuse gets caught by the actual Encyclopedia workers, just as has always been the case. Last edited by Mylene on Sat Feb 23, 2008 8:30 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Apparently "tennis" is a theme of the Akira manga. Who knew?
And I'm not sure "pathetic" is a suitable theme either. Possibly a little subjective. |

I guess what I'm suggesting is if there are audits to remove genres and themes, why not audits to create them? Better to prevent than to fix it later.

Random suggestion: Perhaps it would be best that a theme didn't show up on the series Encyclopedia page until after it has been through the full audit? It might keep getting submitted by people, but unless that hurts the system, it would keep wrong ones from showing up without requiring that a certain number of people submit it before it even gets the chance for an audit.
The main reason for my post is that I just got an audit for "comedy" for Futari wa Pretty Cure. The problem is that the source is: "I'm currently watching this series - Download from [this is a bittorrent website]'s site." |

petran79 (from p. 4): You probably should post your suggestion in the Encyclopedia forum's "Encyclopedia Suggestion List" thread.
Sometimes porn sites are the best source (especially for hentai series). |

Personally I don't see how Burning Manly Passion isn't a theme (though the wording may be a bit off). But if something is the focus of a series then doesn't that make it a theme? (Burning Manly Passion was added to Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and that series has that as it's main theme in my opinion, I'll also be honest and say that I was the one who added it).
I think that having audits for stuff recently added would get around this. |

Some of the titles I've had to audit I am just amazed at how there were all of these themes or genres I felt were unnecessary to the title that were actually on there. This is a good way to sort this out.

That's not the way themes were intended, and if you read the description for a theme in the audit (which I believe is the same one for submitting a new theme), "theme" is more along the lines of flavor rather than atmosphere. Mecha, vampire, etc. are what we're looking for as themes: more concrete descriptors. Themes like friendship or "burning manly passion" are more ambiguous as to what that means, and the |

I'll admit I was going more by the definition of theme as learned in english class (major thematic elements that define the story) I still think it works though, as I said earlier the name might not sound the most professional, but what else is there, plus visually burning passion quite literally exists in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

OK, I just saw one I was wondering if I would see come up.
The genre comedy for Ghost Stories. When I first saw this, I watched it subbed, and it is certainly NOT a comedy. When watching the ADV dub however, it certainly is played for comedic effect. Would this count than a a comedy? What are everyones thoughts here? |
