Quote: | As the above paragraph implies, Sword Art Online's first volume is a distinctly uneven experience. It was Reki Kawahara's first ever attempt at writing a novel |
True, he started to write the webnovel in 2002, but his first work picked for publishing was Accel World which he started writing in 2007(published 2009). After the latter saw success, he was asked to rework the earlier SAO into a light novel.

"There are quite a lot of love scenes between Kirito and Asuna—perhaps too many for the book's good" - Never enough for me at least...
I admit I kind of want to check out the audiobook not only because I'm a fan of the franchise and want to hear Bryce narrate it but also because I want to hear how he does Asuna's voice. Like, I can see him do Klein, Heathcliff/Kayaba, even Agil, but Asuna...although a part of me wonders if they could've at least gotten Cherami to come in and do Asuna's lines since Kirito and Asuna's characters and chemistry is so important to the story, but that might not have been practical for an audiobook.
Does kind of make me wonder how he'd approach the rest of the girls' voices (just in the next novel he'll have to do Lisbeth, Silica, and Sachi).

was the audiobook a direct read of the volume or were some lines redone.
I thought the first volume still holds up today, i like putting side stories in "side story volumes" of which sao has so many, "progressives" and all those from the BDs/DVDs/Movie etc...that anime loves to bundle with.
only fault of an audiobook LN is well no more art from ABEC, unless when you buy the audiobook you get a file of the art???

It’s neat that they got to do an audiobook of this.
Is there any more audiobooks with English dub actors?
Cause after hearing Bryce, I wanna hear more audiobooks based on anime/manga.

There's one for The Saga of Tanya the Evil that has Monica Rial(the voice of Tanya) narrating and Chris Guerrero did one for Overlord(he was the voice of Ainz).

To note, the Overlord audiobook released last week but the Tanya one won't release until mid-November.
I belive all of these series also have release dates for at least their second volumes lined up over the next few months as well.

I’m a bit hesitant to get this one. I have the physical book and honestly, the writing is terrible.

Might get it just for the novelty, especially how rare it is.

So not to be that person.....but maybe then you should try and get all the audiobooks...but this one.
I defiantly want more audiobooks for light novels! but I think it might be healthier if all the audiobooks but this one do better then they expected to sell.
Yen press obviously knows that this one will sell....because it's sao...what they don't know if any not sao audiobooks will sell. If there was one thing I could say about the audiobooks they choose to adapt it would be most likely to succeed.
i'll be honest I REALLY REALLY want spice and wolf audio books. or something not an isekai to get an audiobook. AKA The Miracles of the Namiya General Store

I'm glad to see more LNs becoming audiobooks, but it's a shame Yen Press isn't following in the footsteps of Vertical's excellent Monogatari ones. Using a handful of voice actors/actresses to create something like an audio drama works really, really well and alleviates many of the concerns in this review.

Ouch, I feel like I'm the problem when you put it that way, Tanteikingdomkey! I'm a SAO fan, so interests aligns with my interest for this one.

Yeah, I think a lot of people would have loved having more of the anime cast involved and reading for their characters.

You know what they went out of their way to cast the voice actors for the leads for almost all of these I get the wish, but it just feels super greedy to me to ask them to get the others as well....
That said if the spice and wolf VA's somehow managed to get the dub voice actors for both Holo and Lawrence from the anime that would send me over the moon happy.
