Remember when the media often called India "World's largest democracy". Based on this, apparently not.

I haven't seen the series, but I sincerely doubt there's any "deliberate and malicious intention" in the character portrayal. It sounds like a standard "fight for your life" tournament using religious figures from MANY religions. Sounds more like the ruling Hindu Nationalists don't like any non-approved depictions of Hindu Gods.

Also "outraging the religious feelings of any class of [citizens of India]" with "deliberate and malicious intention." I sincerely doubt the same standards would apply over a portrayal of Buddha or Jesus in India.

What does that have to do with anything? It is natural to expect that Hindus would be offended if their religion is demeaned or abused for commercial value. Netflix is also no stranger to offending Christians with impunity. Just because another civilization practices democracy doesn't mean it will tolerate things that they consider morally offensive.

And how does Netflix, a private company, deciding to remove something from it's catalogue there have anything to do with India as a country as it pertains to the type of government they have? India didn't decide anything. Netflix did.

As a person born in India, I knew for sure that there was no way this could be ever allowed to air in India. Indians are VERY serious about their gods and stuff. Sadly, this is also one of the major reasons why India despite having such an educated force is not able to develop at a much faster rate.

Also, India being the "largest democracy in the world" is meant literally. To put it another way: it is the most populous (derived from 'population') democracy in the world. Not everything is a contest.

Yeah nothing to do with being a democracy or not, although india status as a democracy is taking a serious beating from Modi and the BJP.

But the fact that they removed the anime based on something so petty really show they still have a long way to go, definitely not a secular state.

I wonder if future FF will start avoiding using Shiva.

I heard a lot of fan speculation even before it premiered that this might happen. I'm almost more surprised Netflix aired it to begin with rather than them deciding to pull it later.

Does the show do that? Because it doesn't sound like that was the intent from the creators.

It’s hilarious that it’s banned from one scene of Zeus having a somewhat rough exchange with Shiva. That apparently “demeans” the latter.

Especially since Shiva later on gets a Hell of a good showing at his fight and the series then introduced another very famous historical Indian figure who is portrayed as prolly the biggest uber badass in the show.

I live in the U.S. and I though the U.S. is the "World's largest democracy". Well I learn something everyday.

I can't see how this possibly qualifies as "outraging the religious feelings of any class of [citizens of India]" with "deliberate and malicious intention."

If anything, the religious feelings of Indian citizens weren't considered at all, let alone with "deliberate and malicious intention." They simply weren't part of the original target audience. Any offense the people of India feel is entirely incidental.
