I think what I learned the most here is I can skip anything Jean Karlo writes because we are clearly not going to agree on anything. So I suppose that's very useful now that I can avoid his work going forward. Not sure why you'd ask someone who clearly has emotional baggage to review this show, but I guess it got my click, so you won this round.

I dunno, I think it's useful to have someone that can relate hard to Senpai review it from a "how does this show handle Senpai's struggles" perspective.

Eh, this is a double-edged sword. I've read reviewers who basically shut down and can't assess a show that reminds them of some past trauma and/or situation that they hate.

The "girl trolls/teases guy" genre of comedy anime really needs to stop.
I didn't like the Nagatoro manga very much (it takes faaaaar too long for her to become likable), and I've yet to hear a nice word about the anime. I doubt I will ever watch it.

Man, if I got a nickel for every time I heard this on the ANN forums, I'd be Scrooge McDuck rich now.

They could easily have someone else do the review who may have the same conclusions.
Here's what people have to understand when it comes to reviews just because you like something doesn't mean everyone else will and just because you dislike something doesn't mean everyone else will.

Counterpoint, Jean-Karlo kind of shut down the conversation a lot here. Nick would say something positive, and he would respond with "Yeah, no" and go back to bashing the show. To the point that at least one commenter above has missed that Nick was overall pretty positive to the show.

Yet in the column Nick wrote:

But like I said, I do actually enjoy this show once it's past those particular hurdles.(....) Also I do genuinely find the show funny. |
There's a difference between someone expressing a negative opinion and why they feel that way, and flat out refusing to engage with the material in a positive or healthy manner. The fact Nick kept having to repeat "I actually like it" suggested that the review was largely one sided, with one person's opinion dominating the other. Then it ended with Jean-Karlo ignoring everything Nick had said and seemingly declaring his view, that the anime was the worst of the season, was not just the better opinion, but the objective, correct opinion. This just felt like a weirdly mean-spirited discussion.
The most valuable point Jean-Karlo made overall was that Nagatoro was ultimately another tsundere comedy in a sea of tsundere comedies - with Nick's counterpoint that it had good comedic timing and face game. That's a good point though and should have been the basis of discussion, but it's completely masked by his strong repulsion to the bullying stuff, which has clearly really upset him. He said he won't be thinking about this show in the future and I really hope he means it, as agreeing to this review was clearly a bad idea for his personal mental health.

I don't mind same conclusions if they will be shown in more interesting way, like doing MST3K approach to it. I don't look necessarily for approval, but at least proper discussion of the material. I already hated Jean Karlo's part of the "Big Fish and Begonia" review, because it was also spent in large part on discussing his dislike of Ghibli movies and their influence, and there are few things more boring or annoying to read than someone's hate boner for a Popular Thing, and here was also inserted some weird Internet Feud with people who enjoyed Uzaki and now Nagatoro. This is second strike for me where review was not just critical but also boring/pointless, and entertainment column like TWIA should be better.
