This just reminds me of how influential Miura and Berserk really were, even if people don’t realize it or never read it. Just that first condolence and story from the creator of Hajime no Ippo got me misty eyed. I wasn’t aware the two knew each other, let alone went to the same college.
And it’s kinda adorable that Miura created fanart for other series or interacted with other mangaka like Ken Akamatsu in such a goofy way. Even if the loss is still devastating, seeing so many people in the industry share their experiences with him and their love of his work is heartwarming. |

Damn, that interview with the Cestvs author, released just a month ago, really hits hard. From his words it sounds like he was completely unaware of his condition or was ignoring the symptoms (or there were no symptoms and it took him without warning). Truly an unimaginable loss of an amazing person.

I had forgotten he did end card illustrations for March Comes in like a Lion, they sure do look great. |

It's really great seeing these remembrances from other creators in the field who worked with Miura.... Really shows you how many people he worked with and inspired along the way.

From what I understand, accute aortic dissection is a tear in the aortic valve that is sudden and immediate, not something that one can see coming. Kotaku writer Mike Fahey also suffered from the exact same thing, and he survived (because he got immediate help) but ended up paralyzed. |

The one upside to all of this is that people will now start to understand the legacy of Berserk better. Jim Lee, for example, drew a commission of Guts in 2020:
Actual news outlets covered Miura´s death. Even the Hollywood trades picked this up. The manga overachieved is a fashion gritty adult audience works basically never do. Before A Song of Ice and Fire's HBO adaptation that is. And Dark Souls. Berserk paved the way for this market to exist and Guin Saga paved the way for Berserk in Japan. Kaoru Kurimoto equally died in her mid-50s. |

Both Cascas - Yuko Miyamura, and Toa Yukinari tweeted about him.

Ok I'm confused. How did some mangaka have this information for two weeks, while others didn't? |

I'd say it was all up to Miura's family, who decided who should know beforehand & who shouldn't. I imagine those who did know were invited to the private ceremony & had to promise to not reveal it until the family decided to go public with the information. I would imagine George Morikawa also knew in advance, considering how close they were, but waited until the news was public to share his story via those tweets. |

Yeah, Umino wasn't "some mangaka" in this case. She and Miura were friends, so she'd know if her friend died.

Also, @mockman spotted a quote from a former notable Capcom programmer, which is ironic, because Casca inspired one of the SF 3 characters.
