so, i take it the reviewers did not watch the live action version?
too bad we will have to wait like 10 years for the chance of having kenjiro tsuda to act like saint clause again ( assuming they kept that scene in this anime adapttion) |

It was, as revealed in this interview excerpt. https://natalie.mu/comic/news/418358
I personally wonder if the mangaka meant what he said, or if he was just being polite. On the other hand, there's always the live-action version of Househusband. Plus Tatsu and Miku get a cute drama-original daughter too. (Technically stepdaughter, since she was born from Miku's previous relationship.) PS. Kon Chiaki also directed Backstreet Girls too. |

So the demands of the producer are why it looks this way, rather than any sort of budgetary issues.
Who...who thought this was a good idea? If people wanted to read the manga, they'd read the manga. |

Basically this. It isn't the worst thing ever (the Happy Birthday song is actually a must-watch), but I highly recommend the original - the pacing and drawings are much better. |

The anime series has to be one of the biggest disappointment I have ever seen since Yashahime. Tsuda's voice and execution is awesome but it can't save the series for me. At least Sakamoto tried different takes in regards to make jokes about how cool a person can be. Also, the obligatory cliche of a talking pet.

I have to feel sorry for the folks at the animation studio in this situation. They'll catch most of the flak for it, even though it wasn't their decision. |

I really tried to enjoy the weird "animation" style, and the wonderful voice of Tetsu's actor was definitely the best thing about this adaptation, but, as a manga reader who remembered most of the first episode jokes, it ended up a slog to watch through, which is a crime considering the source.
Maybe I'll try some later episodes that cover material I haven't read yet, see if it gets funnier then. Or I'll put it on as an audiobook to the manga or keep Tetsu voice in the background as I read the volumes. |

I adore the live action series, it's an absolute delight and I am begging yall to watch if you want to see how this 'single joke' story can be expanded into a full episode. It's ridiculously over the top, incredibly silly and occasionally so wholesome and heartfelt it made me cry. The 'animation' may be an unfortunate disappointment but at least there's another version to enjoy, and luckily It's so much fun!

chiakii kon jas worked for toei ( sailor moon crystal ), so she know her way around budget, i think that she is actually the best anime director ( second only to shinbo) when you have a low budget. |

As someone who has never seen a single panel of the manga, I enjoyed the "anime" immensely. If this was an attempt to advertise the source material to the non-manga readers, I'd say it worked in a weird way. Will definitely check out both the manga and the live-action.

I genuinely want to know what's going on behind the scenes at JC Staff. They weren't exactly known for their high quality productions before but they could at least put out some passable and entertaining stuff once in awhile. Over the last 3 or 4 years though every single one of their productions has been notably terrible. It all seems to come down to incompetent management but their management is so incredibly inept at this point that I find it suspicious. I'm just waiting for the big reveal that management has been sabotaging their output and siphoning off the extra cash for their own benefit.
I know that there's been a rejection of the whole "blame/praise the studio" mentality, but when a studio exhibits the same issues across all their productions over the span of years then I think it's safe to start blaming the studios management and production philosophy. |

I'm actually kind of wondering this myself, in all actuality. Part of me is wondering if it is just highly incompetent management (which would explain why they not only got OPM S2 or why a couple of their shows needed to be outsourced completely to a third-party studio in the form of ACGT) or just anime producers being highly incompetent and figuring nearly everything needs to be animated either at JC or MAPPA these days. But unless some industry insiders come out, I doubt we'll ever know. |

Maybe Sakuga Blog will look into it. They have actual insider sources and are the only anime news source I know of that does actual investigative journalism regarding anime productions. I doubt they will but I can still hope. Regardless of what's going on at JC Staff I think it would be really interesting to find out. |

I actually enjoyed Gokudolls a lot and felt that the "animation" made the jokes even funnier.
