I admit it, I am a shoujo fanatic. And no shoujo manga-ka has gained my love and adoration quite like Watase Yuu. I've spent a small fortune on her breakout series, Fushigi Yuugi, getting the entire anime on DVD (not counting OVAs...yet), all the manga that's been released in English so far (vol 1-15 of 18), soundtracks, posters, and other things. And I am now ready to avidly collect the Genbu Kaiden, though sadly enough it's being released rather slowly in English (I'm assuming this is because the Japanese run is not complete).

I love her other works too. I am currently reading Ceres: Celestial Legend, which I rather like, despite some of the negative reviews I've read of it. I think that the anime isn't really overly good, but I do rather adore the manga, it's very interesting, though perhaps could have been a bit shorter, though 12 vols isn't as prolific as others.

I also own Imadoki, featuring my favourite Watase heroine, and Alice 19th, both of which rank amoung my favourite manga period. I hope one day that they become animated, both would make very nice small serieses of around 13 episodes. I've also been following Absolute Boyfriend in Shoujo Beat. So pretty much, there isn't much Watase stuff officially in English that I haven't seen.

I really just generally love all aspects of these manga, though admittedly they are not perfect (after all, what is?), but they are entertaining and appealing and that's really all a manga can ask.

And her side-bars just kill me with cute.

I agree!, Yuu Watase had me spending like crazy. In fact I started buying manga because of Fushigi Yugi.

I owned all the DVD of Fushigi Yugi (OAV and the TV series). I have the complete volumes of Fushigi Yugi Manga. I owned all the volumes of Genbu Kaiden as well.

I'm currently trying to complete, Alice 19th and Imadoki, (which I'm missing 2 volumes for each).

Now my main goal is to start buying Ayashi No Ceres (before they run out of print), and Absolute Boyfriend (even though AB has a lot of negative reviews, I still want to read and collect it).

One more thing, I'm hoping that Viz would license Appare Jipangu, or better yet all of her work. I wish Viz can license Perfect World also, it looks like this magazine has everything about Watase.

I adore Yuu Watase and I would like to own all the things she created. I just love her art style! I can't get enough. LoL. I adore every character that she creates. Even Mrs.Q from Ceres, she has one of the weird mouth I have seen in a manga. Her main characters are very well drawn, beautiful women and handsome guys.

I don't care if I end up penniless, as long as I have her work I'm contented.

Really, did Ceres receive bad reviews Shocked I can't say I'm such a big fan of Watase's, since I lost interest quickly in the first series of FY and Alice, but I loved Ceres and personally thought that it was Watase's best work so far.

I didn't care much about the romance between Aya and Touya, but the story was just damn interesting and thought-provoking and I thought it featured some of the best developed characters in any shoujo work that I read, especially Kagami who was quite idealistic and sympathetic as a villain (I also couldn't help but add him to my bishounen list after seeing him dressed casually with his hair all messy in vol. 12, or was it 13 Anime hyper

I agree with your opinions, I have the same feelings in Fushigi Yugi, I also didn't care about Miaka and Tamahome's romance throughout the series, but I was hooked because the story was interesting enough (for me) to read the entire series. One important thing that kept me from reading was most of the characters were entertaining and memorable.

Although I've never read Ceres (but planning to), I've seen the anime and it was ok. I've read people's manga list in here and they rate Ayashi no Ceres as either excellent or masterpiece, (so I was intrigued, that's why I want to read it).

The thing about Ceres was, I really don't like Touya for Aya, I prefer Yuhi. I remember the kissing they have in the anime, and it was one of the most romantic scenes. LoL, I LOVE AYA and YUHI!

spoiler[Techincally, Aya does end up with Yuhi, because Tooya is going to die soon anyway. Razz Tooya does tell Yuhi to "take care of Aya." Which means when Tooya does die, Yuhi's going to swoop in for the kill (Aya). Haha.] I never liked Tooya much.

I thought FY was a mess (but it was a masterpiece when I was 12. Hee hee.), loved Imadoki, and Ceres truely is Watase's best work, IMHO.

Why did you think FY was a mess?

Anyways I really wanted to read Ceres and of course Imadoki.

For me Watase's best manga was Fushigi Yugi.
Genbu Kaiden is much better though, altough my opinion might change, we'll see if Watase can come up with a great ending.

Count me in as another Watase Addict!

I first discovered her via Fushigi Yugi and when Animerica began advertising Ceres, I became intrigued. When I saw the anime...I was hooked. I LOVE the anime. But the manga...I WORSHIP the manga.

Fushigi Yugi anime and manga are pretty much in step with each other for the most part but so much was left out of the Ceres anime especially the character of Shuro. Shuro was made into a bit character in the anime when that character was so much more.

Alice 19th is my next favorite manga. I really wish that it would be made into an anime.

Absolute Boyfriend - well, it's a little shaky but as pure escapism...it ain't bad.

Ceres is okay. By no stretch would I call it her best however. I find it (and Fushigi Yuugi) are just a bit too long in the end. Which is why I'm glad that her latest work have all been shorter (and also why I am hoping that Genbu Kaiden isn't too long, though in the thread about it someone said that Watase is thinking of it being about 12 volumes, which is still maybe a tad on the long side, but certainly better than FY:SS' 18).

Oh, and I've said this before but I strongly dislike the Ceres anime. It just took too much out, mainly with poor Touya and what personality he had Razz

For what I think Watase's best series is, right now I'm giving that title to Alice 19th, but I think Genbu Kaiden will claim it eventually. But because it's not finished and an ending is really important, I'll give it to Alice right now (and though I am losing hope of it happening...I really would love an Alice anime.

Oh, and I really hope that we get Sakura Gari, her shounen-ai series out, licensed, because I'm really interested in seeing how she does that. I'd also love Oishii Study too. I read a bit of it in scanlation and it's really cute. Epotoransu! Mai would also be nice (but I'll settle for just about anything...and maybe we'll get it, because Viz currently only has Genbu coming out and one Watase title is never enough!)

I would love too read Sakura Gari, by the way how come ANN doesn't have Sakura Gari in the manga encyclopedia?

Any manga created by Watase is fine. I'm thinking of writing a letter to Viz and request to them to license any of her work.

I'm not sure if any of Sakura Gari has actually been released yet, which may be why the encylopedia doesn't have an entry. I just know that it has been announced.

I'm not sure writing to Viz will accomplish anything. One would assume that they already know that there is a readership for Watase titles, since they've released so many of them.

It wouldn't hurt if I try. I already have my draft, I just need to type it and mail it by tomorrow.

So yeah I'm crossing my fingers that Viz Media would consider this request. Hopefully they will reply back.

I have to completely agree with this. I've read all of Watase's translated series and find them enjoyable, if a bit trite. But I really feel that Alice stands apart from the rest. I've yet to read another shojo series with the same kinds of situations and characters (although some of the characters are similar to some of Watase's others). Perhaps I care so much for the series because I am a younger sister who has always struggled through the relationship with my older sister. People complain that the series should have been longer, but I think that's just because it's such an enjoyable series, they hate to see it end. But I think it ended when it should have. She developed a wonderful world and alternate world and the characters are believable and empathetic. I love it.

I, too, wish there were more translated Watase goodness.

I think Alice is the perfect length because I love short manga series. The only thing I would have added maybe would have been the backstories for the last two Lotus masters, since Watase said she had intended to say more about them but never managed to work it in.

I also love how different Alice is from most of the other Watase heroines (at least from the English manga). Most of them are quite outgoing individuals, while Alice is very shy and reserved (at least at the beginning).

I was skimming through Alice 19th (volume 1) and I noticed that it doesn't have the usual Watase side notes, I always read her free space so I was a tad disappointed.

Odd. I just checked my volumes and they are definitely there. In Volume 1, right off the bat.
