I won't be making "as good as" comparisons, but Japan's system does have a significantly lower recidivism rate after imprisonment, so it's definitely more successful at deterring crime in that sense. |

For what it's worth, in some cases of US sex offenders against minors, the perpetrator is required to undergo court-ordered, mandatory counseling to try and coach the offenders on how to stop acting on their impulses. It's unclear if that's also the case here, considering that "good behavior" is a fairly broad and nebulous definition, but if the goal is to release Matsuki back into society "safely", I would hope something along those lines would be a requirement for his "good behavior".

Two points: + recidivism rate after a false conviction doesn't actually measure anything hugely useful, and fairly obviously there aren't any useful official or comprehensive statistics for false convictions. (Anecdotal approaches are more useful than numerical analyses if you have reason to distrust the numbers) + Recidivism rates need to be compared to first-time-criming rates IN THAT POPULATION to see the effect of conviction on future criming; Japan has lower overall conviction rates so you'd expect from that alone that fewer people would be convicted a second time |

I love how you guys are reacting to this like it was the US justice system (or a lot of western ones).
Basically, the guy is screwed. This isnt the US, he will be black balled. He wont be able to create again, even if he tries to do so under a pseudonym because he will be found out. If seiyuu get all their work redubbed cause of being caught with drugs, there is no way a kiddy didlling writer will be writing again. That being said, I do agree the time shouldn't have been suspended. I can see where the judge would have seen that his livelihood had been destroyed, but this is a really serious issue |

He admitted to having a "complex towards women, and acted it out on a stranger." I feel like someone like that is a dangerous criminal. But you're right in that at least this way people will keep an eye on him, so at least for now the danger he poses is minimized. For my part, I feel like this isn't a surprise, and I don't think I'd be surprised if he was given another go at writing a manga in 3 years. It won't be Act-Age though. The artist would definitely never work with him again unless she was like being blackmailed/forced to at risk of losing her career or something (which wouldn't happen, so). Maybe he can work with Wakatsuki or Shimabukuro (Also IMO Wakatsuki's crime is worse in many ways than Matsuki's, but I know a lot of people don't see it that way). |

...except other prominent creators who have committed various sex offenses, like Watsuki for instance, have either received a slap on the wrist or essentially no punishment at all. There's a disturbing track record here. |

Yeah exactly... Like.. in Japan being caught with drugs has way worse consequences than kiddy diddling when it comes to celebrities/well known people. |

I mentioned this up-thread, but the differences in Japanese law might be relevant here. Penal Code, Article 176: "A person who forcibly commits an indecent act through assault or intimidation upon another person of not less than thirteen years of age is punished by imprisonment for not less than 6 months but not more than 10 years." Act No. 52 of 1999, Article 7(1): "Any person who possesses Child Pornography for the purpose of satisfying one's sexual curiosity (limited to those who have come to possess it voluntarily, and are clearly deemed to as such.) is punished by imprisonment for not more than 1 year or a fine of not more than 1,000,000 yen." Yeah, you read that right -- one year at most for possession of kiddie porn. (Disclaimer, I am not an expert on Japanese law.) |

I don't know why people act like rapists or harassers never suffer consequences in Japan when that simply isn't true.. Actors who are convicted of rape have their careers shut down and ended all the time. Even if you disagree with Matsuki's legal sentencing his manga was cancelled and Shueisha has severed ties with him, proving his career was not spared any more than Pierre Taki's was when Taki was caught with drugs. In Hirofumi Arai's case he's actually going to jail for rape, unlike Pierre Taki or Erika Sawajiri who got suspended sentences for drug use. So I disagree with statements like this. |

I knew that there would be no punishment and here we are. Do women´s rights even exist in Japan?

Putting people away for long prison sentences or sentencing them to death is not really the answer either. Especially when you factor in what’s been said about the failures of various justice systems around the world. And while you do have some people who commit crimes and will likely continue doing so once they’re put back out of society not all of them obviously will. |

I can't care less for the US legal system since I am not American.
The sentence is a joke, because how "good behaviour" is checked? Should he go to therapy? What about the victims' feelings? It's exactly the same that happen with Shimabukuro: he was found guilt, his manga cancelled... then the sentence got suspended, and in two years he went back to work, draw Toriko and even finishing his original manga. |

The next person who wants to make an ignorant comment about how sexual assault isn't that bad, he only did it once (when in this case that is not even true), or this is "barely" assault, will be put on moderation immediately. There is no room here for that sort of mentality. If you want to excuse this sort of behavior it says a lot about you. Go do it somewhere else that basks in that sort of mentality like sankaku.

But the problem with this statement is that, at least in terms of sexual harassment crimes, Japan's record keeping is shoddy at best. Most of it goes unreported because of cases like this - https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/12/19/national/social-issues/gender-bias-politics/ TL;DR - Japanese councilwoman accuses mayor of sexual assault. She is not only removed from her position but the town also votes her to leave. In the US, if you are arrested and imprisoned for child molestation, pornography, etc, it's pretty much a death sentence once the general prison population knows that you're a 'chomo'. |

I pretty much guessed he'd get the suspended sentence. All up to Matsuki now (since he asked for it) to keep control of himself.
