Back on topic now and any English dub that isn't like fingernails on a blackboard is a good dub for me, but the all time worst dub for me is still "Strange Dawn". Anyone who is watching hentai for the story is watching too much hentai. It's like eating lots of chocolate at every meal because you are only interested in the wrappers. |

That metaphor is one of the most insightful I have ever read. Not that I have read very many metaphors, mind you, but I think one catches the "drift". I suppose, on reflection, being wise has its perks. Like causing awe in the newly-born like myself. |

Great column this week Zac!
I agree - I like that ANN doesn't review hentai and yet for folks who want those reviews, it's nice they have somewhere to go. Isn't the world nice? Even the One Piece dub doesn't sound too bad on a Friday morning. OK I'm done. LOL I'd read the Fan species book - kinda sounds like Spike Spencer's illusive books on cons that you can't find anywhere (but at cons he attends?) The Anime/Manga question had some pretty good answers. I'm looking forward to the answers because I'm really finding more and more dubs I like these days. As long as the bad dubs aren't just a list of 4Kids dubs, I'm interested to see what people say... |

Pretty funny article. I didn't feel like reading the whole response on The Indignant Armchair Quarterback, though.
I'm with Dayton Williams on the Answerfans question, though I tend to lean towards anime myself. If I could point out two things it would be that firstly, colour, music, voices and animation rule, and that secondly I don't see how reading manga is any more imaginative than watching anime. It's something stuck between being a novel and being anime – the only things left for you to imagine are things like colour and sound. |

@dargonxtc -- I never saw Kite, so I don't know.
My prediction for the Worst Dubs in Answerfans next week: "I got a lot of hate expressed for 4kids' One Piece, Naruto, and these other popular series, but I'll print these submissions from people who talked about lesser-known, uniquely bad dubs." I stayed away from the English track on Fantastic Children, so I might have to go with Garzey's Wing, as made infamous in Buried Treasure. Then again, Garzey was pretty bad to begin with, so for dubs that bring down otherwise good material, Love Hina and Crest/Banner of the Stars come to mind. "I can't stand being around men from the land!" Some of my favorite English dubs are ones that improve on the original source at least in writing, if not in acting. So to that end, I have to mention a few Steven Foster dubs, namely Ghost Stories, Generator Gawl, Orphen, and Colorful, as well as Girls Bravo from the folks at New Gen. |

That's funny, as that's almost the exact same logic that led to people thinking that the already-mentioned Pirates of the Caribbean movie would be a failure. That film's success literally shocked the industry because the conventional wisdom was "pirates aren't special and no one is impressed by them anymore." Plus, One Piece doesn't feel much like a traditional pirate story anyway. With the possible exception of Zoro (it's the bandanna, mostly) none of the crew even LOOK like pirates. I think he makes a much better point about the timing of the show's premiere. I've always thought that was a factor, too. Had OP come out just three years later, it would probably be in the position Naruto is now. But it came out at a weird time, when DVD was just beginning to take over, so people were beginning to look past VHS, but digisubs were still a little ways off so fansubs could only be obtained on an outdated video format. It was a transitional year for US anime fandom, pretty much the worst possible time for a new major franchise to come along, at least on our end (in Japan, of course, it was and remains a hit of monumental proportions.) I think the biggest obstacle to One Piece's success is the legacy of the 4Kids dub. The show's strength is that while it looks kiddie and dumb at first glance, you are shocked at how good it is when you sit down and watch it. 4Kids killed this by making the show just as kiddy and dumb as it looked. For One Piece to succeed here, it will have to overcome the perception 4Kids left so many viewers with. FUNimation's dub accomplishes this, but the question is how many viewers will give the show a second look? The other major obstacle as I see it, is length. One Piece is closing in on 350 episodes. I can't begin to imagine the cost of dubbing that many shows. OP has a loyal otaku fanbase thanks to fanubs, but it needs mainstream and casual viewers buying the DVDs and merch or there's no way FUNi can justify the expense of dubbing such a massive series. FUNimation took a big gamble and managed to rescue One Piece, and I really hope it pays off for them. But it won't be easy. |

More like none of the crew are pirates at all, except in name. Do they: - Attack merchant ships for their goods? - Rape/pillage/murder villagers? - Engage in any actual pirating activities? No. They do not. Not to say that One Piece doesn't have its value, but it's as much about pirates as Naruto is about (orange jumpsuit wearing) ninjas. People can call Matsumoto's Captain Harlock a pirate all they want, but he rarely did any actual pirating. Wearing an eyepatch doesn't make you a pirate. Nor does flying the Jolly Roger. Pirates are greedy, bloodthirsty thieves and murderers. There are no such people in the Straw Hat crew. But since that's neither here nor there, look at it this way - if people are looking for traditional pirate fiction, they wouldn't find it in One Piece. Thanks, I thought I was the only person who liked the Ghost Stories dub. Admittingly, by the last volume it was getting pretty lame (haha, I get it, old men wanting to have sex with 5th graders is funny somewhere), but it started out with good intentions. At the very least, it was well acted and they actually gave character to some pretty lifeless people in the show. I wanted to write an essay once called "How to be an Annoying Anime Fan and Ruin it for Others." It involved getting angry at all dubs, collecting bootlegs of series on R1, wearing unflattering costumes, and pretending bootleg magical girl shows are inherently better than anything from the States. This series will be better. |

I'm glad ANN has decided not to review hentai. I think a lot of anime fans forget that hentai is essentially pornography and as such does not belong on a site like this.
As for next week's question ... I think I might actually write in! I love dubs, I far prefer a good dub to subtitles. Best dub for me is probably Fullmetal Alchemist, but I really, really love the Evangelion dub - so many memorable performances; Allison Keith as Misato, for example, was amazing and Tiffany Grant's Asuka was outstandingly unique! |

Ditto! Believe it or not, I still like the rap. When I first saw the 4Kids dub, I just thought it was a fun kids' show. I recognized the style as anime, but just thought Anime = Japanese cartoons. Later, when I started getting on various forums, I saw the hatred for the editing & the dub. Understanding 4Kids wanted a kids' show, they should have picked something other than One Piece. I now know that the manga & the original anime are geared to teens, not 6-11 kids. Will it succeed thanks to FUNimation? Yes, but as a niche title, not a juggernaut like DBZ & Naruto have become. |

Actually, it's quite a popular opinion. You'd be surprised how many people hate on it for stupid, shallow reasons. I've seen someone who disliked it simply because they cast a woman with a deep voice to play Envy instead of a guy. That and the whole "Paku Romi is better than Vic LOL" thing. |

I also thought the dub was actually kind of neat. And now I know what One Piece is about, so it clearly is effective marketing too. Of course, I also liked Fox's opening to Escaflowne (and don't really care for the Japanese one all that much).
It's a shame that the show wasn't able to cash in on the pirates crazy the PotC brought on. Anyway, while I think hentai can have interesting stories (and those are the ones I prefer, since I like to have at least some semblance of a plot around my sex, thank you very much :]), it definitely isn't the focus. So I do agree that the review style that ANN has isn't the best suited to it. Plus there are always other places you can go to get reviews for your porn. |

What was so bad about Strange Dawn? Admittedly I only caught a few episodes and haven't seen the sub to compare it to, and the accents seemed a bit random, but I didn't think it was that bad. |

Umm. That isn't a costume. It's called style. Something a troglodyte like you was apparently born without. (Sorry! I couldn't resist. ) |

Ah one piece dub. Gotta love the lollypop !
Worst Dub: Magic Knight Rayearth. Jeeze. It was terrible and I only listened to a little bit of it ! That and probably one piece/yu-gi-oh/mew mew power which i saw like one episode of. Yu-gi-oh can almost be taken seriously in Japanese ! *almost* Best dub: Beck or Death Note. I dont even like dubs, but even I have to admit that both of these are very good. I also have a soft spot for the sailor moon and Digimon dubs, but probably not cause they're actually good ! |
