According to several reliable tweets, anime historian WATANABE Yasushi (born 1934) passed away on 27th March 2020. While his name may not be well known to most anime fans, he was one of the first anime historians in Japan, co-authoring, with Yamaguchi Katsunori, the "Nihon Animêshon eiga-shi" (History of Japanese Animated Film) in 1977. For anyone doing research on anime up to the mid-1970s, this is still an important resource.
If you want to know more about Watanabe-san, the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2014 honored him with a "Special Achievement Award". The biographical information and award reason are also available in English at http://archive.j-mediaarts.jp/en/festival/2014/achievement/18saa04_WATANABE_Yasushi/ Only weeks before his death, the book "Nippon Anime Sôseiki" (The Genesis of Japanese Anime) on anime in the early 20th century was published by Shueisha. Watanabe-san wrote the first part about the "three pioneers" of anime in 1917. More information (in Japanese) can be found on Shueisha's website: https://books.shueisha.co.jp/items/contents.html?isbn=978-4-08-781687-7 May he rest in peace. Frederick S. Litten |
