Also why the hell would they go with such a newbie studio Azur lane is one of the top selling games out there you're telling me they could not get a more professional studio to do the job.

"But our game is hot NOW! We need to get the anime out NOW so that we can get as many whales in as possible NOW! NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW!"

And guess what studio isn't already booked for several years? A new studio just founded in 2017, the year the game launched in Asia, who had never done a TV anime before this. Let's see, what did I write October 1.... https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1804422&show=0#msg58452463 "If Azur Lane somehow comes out on time every week without suffering any delays, they deserve a pizza trophy. And free tank rides and road bike accessories." (Reference to Actas' Girls und Panzer and Long Riders, both of whose episodes 11 and 12 had the same fate)

they have ruined the story

What story? Azur Lane is a boat-waifu collection game "Commander! We're going to engage the Sakura Empire at Midway, Uguu!" isn't really a plot, so I fail to see how they can ruin it.

Personally... I don't think this lore is much good. I guess I can see how people who get really into it would be upset (waifu attachment is one hell of a drug), but if I had my way with the anime, I would have thrown it all out to make it pure slice of life, like "Today's Menu for the Emiya Family" or "Cooking With Valkyries." Seemingly everyone's favorite part of KanColle was the infamous curry contest. That would have been easier to animate, too. Rolling Eyes

I'll talk about them together because I believe one is effecting/causing the other. The animation quality is in part born out of the weakness of the story and vice verse. There are little things like the incessant repetition of the same lines over and over by certain characters, which has in turn allowed for the repetition of various scenes again and again. One of the fandom claims about AL was that it had the potential for a much better story, but that hasn't been shown to be the case at all.

As someone who has played the game, I think one of the issues is that there is hardly any congruence between the anime's plot and anything that has happened in the game. And while one may say the whole shtick with the commander may have seemed tired, the anime has only seen fit to acknowledge that humans exist somewhere, but has done almost nothing to explain where they are or why these ships are even fighting. You could have just assumed this was some alt. history fighting of WWII, but they papered over that potential early on with the ladies having acknowledged the fact that are not "actually" the ships they are supposed to be. That is in turn countered in the narrative, however, by their seeming strong attachment to the fates of their namesakes. At this point, we can only assume these ships are allying or fighting purely on their own, since the anime has made no mention whatsoever regarding the existence, let alone orders, of any commander.

Overall, it's like the anime was made to be part backstory to the game, part telling of the first few chapters of the game. But its so disjointed in that regard it hardly makes sense to view that way.

Toss in an apparent imperative to plod out as much campy "fan service" as possible, the fact that unlike most anime they can't get away with indistinct background faces and instead have to pseudo-Easter-egg various ship-girls from the game in every scene, and the trudge of the slow-paced story, it's a small miracle they kept on pace this long.

If only J.C staff had the common sense to do this for One Punch Man.

Almost 3 months? Something must have gone pretty far off the rails if it needs that much time.

Because of the way TV slots are booked, it's virtually impossible to delay something for more than a week or two without it having to be held over so it fits into the end of the next season, so around 3 months.

Did you even read the article it says they will rebroadcast it starting with january 3rd, so free time slots aint the issue. Its simply them giving themself more time to improve some lil bit the episodes that already aired and instead of 2weeks they get 2months~ time to complete final 2 episodes...

It's.. Kinda make sense. Kodakawa treatment towards Kancolle is kinda bad. Nearly 1 year after Season 2 trailer leaked in Kancolle event but still no official public release. No Kancolle figures announced in recent WonHobby and some of planned releases might get cancelled(figma Nagato Kai 2 and Mutsu Kai 2). Its clearly Kadokawa hates Azur Lane. Some fans joked that the Azur Lane and Kancolle should get a collaboration. Like hell Kadokawa will let them. I already quit the game thanks to Kadokawa. Instead of trying to saving the franchise, they're trying to kill it.

Back to actual discussion. The 3 months delay isn't really a deal breaking to me. I had similar situation when Girls und Panzer was delayed back in older days. I mean, I wait months for OVA/TV Special to come out anyway and 3 month is short compared with years of waiting(I'm talking about you, Kancolle Season 2! Been waiting since 2015!)

I would argue it’s similar case with Girls und Panzer and God Eater, surly they can finish the episodes faster than late Mid-March, but they have to wait some Winter anime to finish in order to get the airing block.

I imagine the bigger issue is that they need to redraw the whole thing, not just two episodes. Animation in Azur Lane is bad. Like, Mobile Suit Gundam memes bad. It's not so much off-model as a lot of scenes descend into all-out excitable doodling. It has reached the point where 2ch have been bouncing around a conspiracy theory that Kadokawa Shoten are actively interfering with the studio's attempts to hire more animators because they're salty over Azur Lane mounting a convincing competition against KanColle.

You know the show's condition is something else when not only did the fans come up with a conspiracy theory to explain why it looks so bad, but the theory in question sounds actually plausible.

As someone who's played both games and knows the stormy, fractured history of chinese-japanese relations, i can honestly buy that theory as being very plausible. Honestly, Kancolle's gameplay is utter shit and geared solely towards japanese whales with enough money to literally pay their way through the game (apart from the RNG which frocks everyone) and cares nothing about international fans. Contrast that with Azur Lane who, frankly, does everything better that it's no surprise if Kadokawa really was salty af.

No idea really, unless it's just a Japanese national pride thing that they don't want to let a Chinese company crush Kancolle. That'd be incredibly petty though.

Actually, Azur Lane has a pretty good story for a mobile game. It's much better than the barely disguised nationalistic revisionism that Kancolle's "story" is.
It'd be incredibly petty, sure, but i wouldnt be surprised if it were true.

I totally agree with you Hikarunu. Kadokawa has really dropped the ball with Kancolle. The game itself (as in gameplay) sucks, the accessibility is poor for non-japanese, the devs can be extremely inconsistent (oh god, i still hate the events and the RNG) and it's basically a setup to milk JP whales for as much money as possible.
The anime's storylike went downhill after the curry contest episode, there was such a huge delay between the anime and the movie and still no real sign of the teased season 2.

The 3 month delay is no biggie for me either as i also went through the similar situation with GuP. Considering there have been much longer delays, 3 months is paltry. It's just 1 cour for bugs sake.
