Hello Very Happy

I have been out of the anime loop for a couple years now and am just now getting back in. One anime I really loved was Tenchi and was wondering if there is anything else like it out there right now?

I was thinking about trying Chobits or Shopping arcade but I have not heard anything about them.

Well any help would be great and thanks in advance. Very Happy

If you liked Tenchi, I am sure you will like Love Hina.

You could always look into the original (well, I'm not sure that it is, but at least it's the most seminal) boy-meets-alien-babes cartoon, Urusei Yatsura, though the animation is dated and it's much more of an acquired taste, so I'd definitely rent it first. Still, I think it's a better series overall than Tenchi Muyo, though it's not exactly the same sort of show; only Lum actually loves Ataru (because of his girl-chasing tendencies, his relationship with Shinobu was already in decline long before Lum showed up) with the other alien babes, if they appear to love him, having ulterior motives of one sort or another, with a handful of single-episode exceptions that don't work out, so it's not exactly a "harem anime", and it's much more of a straight, episodic, comedy show without much in the way of an arcing storyline (with a handful of weird, mostly serious episodes, but those are self-contained).

I haven't exactly been avoiding Love Hina, but I've never seen an episode of the anime nor have I read a single volume of the real manga (doujins don't count). I don't know if I'm just getting too old for such things, with my obvious affection for Tenchi Muyo being more of a nostalgia thing, having been one of the first series I watched when I first got heavily into anime just before I turned 20 (I'm 29 now), but I haven't felt that much of an urge to try Love Hina, having read so many mixed reviews (yes, more of the anime than of the manga, I know) and having much more limited funds than I once did.

The sort of anime and manga I buy now, with the singular exception of the Oh My Goddess manga, are fairly different from Tenchi Muyo, like Super GALS!. Aside from GXP, I'm just not that interested in getting acquainted with any more harems, at least of girls (though Fruits Basket isn't exactly a male harem, since most of the guys don't seem to be interested in Tohru in a romantic or sexual way). Then again, I've also been underwhelmed by the plot summaries I've read for the first two episodes of the third Tenchi Muyo! OVA series, so even the old harem I like isn't that much of a sure thing for me anymore.

I am just in the mood for somthing light hearted and fun hehe.

And I hear ya about the funds thing. I started watching anime when I was about 21, I am now 32 and just bought my own house so for a while there everything was a bit tight in the funds.

But now things have eased up and I have been getting back into the swing of things ie..Anime, Games etc....

I have been taking random stabs at some anime I have never heard of..I picked up 3 the other day Infinite Ryvius, Voices of a Distant Star, The Twelve Kingdoms..

I do not know about you but it's hard for me cause many of the friends I had I lost when they married and had children and well thats just not my thing so I am a bit of a loner these days as it's hard to find people my age that are into games and anime as there number 1 source of entertainment lol. Very Happy

I was happy to find this website though gave me some good idea's.

I would say the same thing...both are great anime series...and I can't wait for GXP to come out...but hey, if Tenchi is coming out with a new series, should Love Hina respond and create a new series of their own? (That's just my theory)

Please don't get Magical Shopping Arcade (It's not good) The people talk in a southern accents that you will hate in the dubbed. Happy Lesson (which is exactly like Tenchi) is good. It's the same consept as Tenchi. (A guy is stuck with many girls in one house) It's good but I recommend the OVA.

Granted that the dubs can be annoying in Abenobashi, they're not terrible. I felt that the overall humor far outshone the annoying pseudo-texas accent the main characters speak in (which was ADV's idea of Osaka-ben accent gone english). I thought it was excellent, but as always opinions are going to differ on what's good anime and what's not.

If you're looking for a good lighthearted anime I can think of no better than Fruits Basket, and given the excellent prices Funimation released it for its a fairly good deal.

Happy Lesson is actually pretty funny... and if you liked Tenchi, you'll probably love this one. No nudity shots, though, if you're into that... and what guy isn't....

And as for other harem anime, I believe Love Hina was based off of Maison Ikkoku, though I haven't seen it. And since it was made by Rumiko Takahashi, I'm sure it's pretty funny.

While Maison Ikkoku is a fun series (and being so darn affordable - who can lose?), but it certainly doesn't classify as a harem show. Two love interests does not a harem make!

Even though it's not a Tenchi-esque harem series, I just gotta second this because I absolutely love this series. Definitely worth checking into. Very Happy

It is not really the harem idea or the nudity, I guess more of just the light heartedness of it..

I picked up the entire series of Love Hina yesterday on dvd..It was in a box set and I watched the first disk and it is pretty funny..

Would anyone recomend Chobits as being good? Not being like Tenchi but just a good show in general?

I was also really fond of Blue seed..I tried watching the new show and it seemed a little more adult now and it just turned me off hehe..

Well i'm off... But thanks alot for all the idea's.

New show? By chance do you mean Blue Gender? Because I've found that people seem to confuse Blue Seed & Blue Gender quite a bit because of the titles, even though they're both completely unrelated.

As far as Chobits goes...the anime's good, but by no means great. The manga, though, is great, and I'd advise looking into that if you can.

You're probably reffering to the OVA series Blue Seed: Beyond. Granted its definately targeted at an older audience, its not that bad. I thought it was decent for a three episode add on, and the last episode ("Six Babes Bathing In a Killer Hot Spring") was a fun extra. So you might want to give it a chance and finish the dvd off if you still have it.
