This news caught me off-guard when a friend mentioned it earlier today. Farewell to a true legend of manga, and hoping he rests in peace.

Very sad news indeed. I heard about it first on Reddit and had to come here to see if it was true. The one positive thing to take away from this is that he helped create characters that brought joy and happiness to people over multiple decades. Hell, Lupin transcends generations. Not many can say something like that. He may be gone but he left a lasting legacy for all. Now he can cruise forever into the sunset with the top down and a smile on his face.

I love Lupin III and will always be appreciative of him sharing him with the rest of us. Sad to see him go. Hope he rests in peace.

The manga is the best Lupin media. Manga Lupin rules and is the ultimate turbo-charismatic id-driven psycho asshole. I could easily compare him to the Warden from Superjail, except better. Actually a psycho Bugs Bunny would be a better comparison.

RIP Mr. Kato, ya did well and created memorable works of art.

(Still should had asked the Leblanc Estate for copyright permission before using the Lupin character though.)

^ Not really the time. Also that wasn't an issue in his homeland of Japan when he created it.

I figured some 70s/80s legend had to go next, but this kinda sucks. There’s something about the Lupin formula that I—and countless others—never get sick of, no matter how many variations I see. And some of those variations were damn groovy, even putting talented young creators like Miyazaki and Sayo Yamamoto on the global map. Fortunately, Lupin himself will long outlive his pops.

I don't think that MP ever had any idea that the character would gain a following outside of Japan, or even that it would become more than just another manga character of it's time period within Japan.

Oh wow. Such an iconic creator. Lupin III and his comrades are such anime staples. I even cosplayed him via cosplaying the dorky dad on FLCL. I gave a jacket to a friend for his wedding where he wore a Lupin outfit and his best man waz styled on Jigen.

Truely a legend has passsd.

Zeino: Yeah, that Cagliostro commentary which is inappropriate for family viewers didn’t help. But I met MP, and he was a gentleman with the ladies, and even signed my Cagliostro DVD sleeve I had to pawn for cheap with the set. Miss you, and maybe you’ll get Yamada and Naya to act out your Arabian Nights manga wherever both of you three are.
