It looks weird to me but it might make sense in the context of the film. It's definitely going for a more lifelike look. Almost to the point that a strong guy in some blue spandex and a suit could probably pull off the design.
I loved the Sonic games as a little kid but I thought the cartoon was crap and I never got into any of the lore or outside stories. I wouldn't be seeing this movie regardless of the designs.

The gloves thing is odd, unless Sonic Creators headcanon is that Sonic's was born with gloves and thus can't ever take them off????
the body porportions I agree with, but, its not like Sonic hasn't gone through redesigns over the course of the game cycles.

I feel like Sega has been damaging Sonic's IP just fine these past couple of years.

Quote: | The deck showed the design of the titular character Sonic for the film, although the page is no longer accessible. |
This makes the rumours about the initial cut of the Monster Trucks children's film seem like a tame hiccup by comparison. At least the intellectual property remains firmly in the public consciousness, if for unenviable reasons.

Once upon a time we got movies like Roger Rabbit, Cool World, and Space Jam, which mixed beautiful 2D animation with live-action actors. We realized cartoons and real actors could co-exist without having to make them realistic CG monstrosities. I miss those days.

If the original creator himself dosent like the designs, well you got a problem.

Man, it should be a rule that the original creators (or at least have someone they trust represent them) are involved with these kinds of things. Considering how much damage it could do to the brand's IP.

I think LadyGT's rendition would have been perfect. Sadly, that also now means that there is likely no way the design will end up being like that. It's a shame. Was never a big Sonic fan to begin with, but even I could tell the "leaked' design never going to fly.

Didn't Cool World bomb?

Not really since Naka hasn't worked on a Sonic game for years. Hell he doesn't even work for Sega anymore.

Kentaro Miura served as a supervisor on the 2016 anime......and we know how that went.

I agree with him. The proportions are strange and too human-like, so it looks off. Why does he have white fur where his gloves are supposed to be? His arms should be tan color like his belly, not blue. So much wrong and weird about this design..
