Now that my favorite anime, Kodomo no Omocha, has been licensed, I wonder when the other crown jewels of Japanese animation will be licensed next? What I'd like to see:

Flame of Recca - I consider this to be the best fighting anime ever made. And since it hasn't been licensed, it further confirms my suspicions that American anime company executives are idiots.

Naruto - an instant classic, I really doubt any is willing to shell out the money to buy this series - at least for a few more years.

Legend of Galactic Heroes - it's good, but is it too much of a space epic with animation that's too old?

Slam Dunk - I know, I know - the sports anime genre doesn't do well in the American market. But still, 100 million manga readers can't be wrong! Can they?

Kodocha was licensed? When did this happen? And who got it?

Child's Toy hasn't been licensed yet, unless you can prove otherwise. The Manga has been licensed, yes, but that's not the same thing.

Flame of Recca HAS been licensed. By Viz, as you can see furhter along down here. Simply because it hasn't ben licensed, doesn't mean certian people are idiots. You know, actually buying a show, in the condition people want, isn't easy and ACTUALLY COSTS MONEY.

Naruto is probably already in a semi-bidding war between various companies. One of them is more than likely Viz.

Companies that were interested in the Legend of the Galactic Heroes license only wanted to buy a part of the series, and the creators specifically said that if it was to be released with an English translation, then it would have to be the ENTIRE THING

Slam Dunk - Give it time.

I've been waiting years for this to happen, but I've heard nothing about it. I doubt that any company would want to put so much commitment into bringing over a 102 episode series that they don't even know will do well here.

Yeah, I've seen Mariela's list, but I'm still not convinced about Flame of Recca. That list has always had a lot of inaccuracies. I think it's in the same boat as Hikaru no Go - originally listed as licensed, but later unlisted. Yes, I realize it costs money, but my argument is that studios are so ignorant of good titles that they don't realize it's money well spent to go after this thing.

The only reason I know about Kodocha being licensed is because I ran the Petition site for this series and I was notified last week about this. Unfortunately, I'm not at liberty to say who actually has it.

Yeah, I'm with you on Naruto. I don't see that bidding war ending anytime soon, though.

LoGH and Slam Dunk are both in the same boat, I think. Too old. Too many episodes.

It was officially announced at Acen (I was there). It isn't due for a while yet, so they haven't bothered to make anynoise about it.

Assuming all this is true, for those of us whom saw Kodocha at anime clubs around half-a-decade ago, isn't this one of those titles that would have been better off had it been licensed when the iron was still hot in anime club circles, like around 2000? I certainly would have bought it myself if it had been licensed back then, but it wasn't licensed and I have since moved on to other things... well, that, and I don't have nearly as much money to burn on anime as I had four years ago.

Then again, I suppose there are still enough people whom watched it at clubs "way back when" whom would be still interested and the shoujo sub-niche of anime fandom has grown to the point where it would still be "new" to many people, so I guess it would be commercially viable even though it's a "long" series. But for wacky shoujo comedy, my own problem, besides the money one, is that between then and now, Super GALS was released, and, for my tastes, is a better show, albeit slightly less wacky, relatively speaking.

Well...as far as the "What's Next" portion of the thread, I haven't heard of Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu, Gunslinger Girl, Kanon, Macross: Do You Remember Love?, Macross Zero, Scrapped Princess, To Heart, or Uchuu no Stellvia getting licensed. Same with Naruto, but it was already mentioned.

Well Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu is most likely going to be picked up by ADV once they finish up releasing the last few DVDs of the first season. Which will be around late Febuary or early March.

As for One Piece, companies don't usually like to tackle a series that large (and still going on) unless they know that it is going to sell well. Though if I company does pick it up, my most logical guess is that it would be Viz.

My guess is that Macross will be taken by Bandai, but that is only a skeptical guess.

As for what I want to see published here, I want most of all to see Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu, Scrapped Princess, and Full Metal Alchemist to make it over to US shores.

Umm....I know like I'm gonna sound like a know-it-all, but this title has also been licensed. My source has told me there will be an announcement shortly. The only reason I know this one is because I also happen to own some anime stores and one of my industry salespeople told me.

When did you hear this?

As of 3 weeks ago it was officially unlicensed. It was thought to be licensed prior to then.

Hmm... given the glaring error about Flame of Recca, I'd say that I'm more expecting this poster to be the kind that wears the sign "open mouth, place foot here."

As such, it would be nice if Kodocha was licensed, as well as One Piece, but if we don't hear anything at Ohayocon, I'd say that it would be reasonable for us to say that this person was full of it.

If it turns out to be true, then you have my apologies in advance for doubting you.

Ohayocon? With such huge titles like Kodocha and One Piece, why in the world would they announce it at a place like Ohayocon? I wouldn't hold your breath until a bigger con rolls around.
