On the one hand, Gen isn't wrong about how Netflix tends to handle anime, or that it came down to Netflix finally being the one to pay a very high licensing fee. On the other hand, it still sounds pretty salty.

I have a feeling that the timing on Netflix's part wasn't a coincidence. Crunchyroll and Funimation are now in positions where Eva's undoubtedly high cost wouldn't have been as much of a hindrance, so Netflix probably decided it couldn't keep waiting with the hopes the price would come down.

Netflix sucks when they pick up an anime that is currently airing, the way they distribute their stuff is honestly inexcusable. That being said, I think Eva is a perfect match for the service, it's already completed, and a series people are going to want to binge watch. FUNi is angry that somebody was willing to pay what one of the biggest IPs on Earth was worth, and that it wasn't them.

Transparent jealousy. They've never commented on any other Netflix acquisition.

He's got a point about Evangelion drowning in the colossal Netflix sea.

But he cannot help but sound salty as hell.

While I would've liked to have seen Funimation license Evangelion, considering they have the Rebuild movies, I just hope Netfilx decides to re-release Eva on BD/DVD, to get it back on the market.

Hopefully the new English dub won't be too bd. Given that Amanda Winn-Lee said she's met the new English director, and it is in good hands.

My main fear about this whole thing is that I hope he just didn't shoot down Funimation's chances for licensing the show for home video in the future.

He's honestly right about how Netflix manages their anime. Just look at Seven Deadly Sins which is just as popular in Japan as MHA compared to how popular it is here in the west.

Though I think Eva is probably best on a service like Netflix. Where a non anime fan may come across it because of name recognition alone.

He's not exactly wrong but he's salty for this too. I don't think I ever seen him respond like this. If Netflix can give me a Bluray release then there is nothing wrong with the Netflix acquisition. But if not then it will prove Fukunaga right. I've been waiting too long for that Bluray release.

Wish he mentioned why Funi didn't get the license within the last 8 years. Even if it was expensive the license was probably worth more 2010-2014 when anime youtubers were at their height and could've been shilling it without much worry of copyright issues.
Also Netflix is paying to add a new dub on top of the license cost so I have to wonder if the cost was really that high, or maybe the old dub would've cost more to buy alongside the license, or the profits would have to be shared with the original dubbing company.

I just hope that Neon Genesis Evangelion will get a blu-ray release in the west. Not too concern about the new dub since the original tv series I only ever watched in Japanese and plan on watching it Japanese again when it's put on Netflix.

On today's news "a company's president says they are better at doing their stuff than the competition"

That being said, i don't think the guy is that Petty, it isn't like he organized that interview so he could vent about it, probably the interviewer just brought up the topic and he did the obvious thing to do, to take a chance to make people discuss his brand

He's not wrong Netflix doesn't really promote anime that well. On the other hand Netflix has international appeal which is some thing that Funimation is not.
