Going to the largest anime convention in the country for your first con? That's a double good luck from me. I go to AKON every year and to me THAT'S huge? lol Wayyyy to many people.

I had totally forgotten about that Otakin thing, which is just way too weird. Sure, I spent a good year or two of my childhood pretending I was a Pokemon trainer or had my own Digimon (yes, you can laugh now) but not even as a 9 year old did I ever really believe that stuff was true.
Out of curiosity, I checked out that livejournal community, and found something interesting. Someone (apparently, this is the internet after all) wrote a term paper on Otakin and the like. The link of which is here. It also deals with 'soulbonding', which is an even sadder concept: people that honestly believe anime characters are their soulmates. All of a sudden I'm reminded of that girl that said she was so in love with Sonic she wanted to drink his blood and eat his vomit... totally weird. |

Never got into the whole imaginary thing...at least not publicly. It was all in my head.
Still waiting for Anon to nuke the net... |

Ahhh, I totally forgot about the otakukin question/answer. When I first read it I said to myself there can't really be people like that in the world. Well, I followed the link Zac provided and read a couple of the people talking there. They all seemed looney to me.
Since the first time that article was published I had the pleasure of actually meeting one of them in real life. Oh how thrilling that was being stalked by someone beliving they were Spike Spiegel. They eventually left me alone but those were several weeks that were not fun at all.
Oh, they are still there.... laying in wait till the time is ripe to launch thier Anon vengence. |

YES! YOU ARE THE CRAZIEST FAN GROUP EVER! But in all seriousness, every fandom has it's batshit insane members. I mean, Jesus, people get killed over soccer every year. And I personally don't see what makes cosplay geekier then, say, covering your whole person in body paint and exposing your blue-shirtless-self to your favorite football team. |

Otakukin. I always have fun making fun of those freaks. They are probably the easiest thing in fandom to fry on since the narutard.

The Headless-Naruto shot was funny.
Wow there r actully people who have "Power" :\ Im kinda scared now... >< I CAN'T believe someone doin a Naruto move on someone else. It just UNREAL! If I saw a 500 pound person wearing a "Rikku" Cosplay From Finail Fantasy I would laugh, But that has guts. The best thing about Cosplayers they get to show their "Other Side" The person who they admire, "Who they want to be". Anime can be the gate way to get out of reality... *Going out of Topic* Happy New YEARS-Desu -Hikori |

I just have few things to reply to regarding your rant on fansubber's fonts.
And I'm sure that, since this is a recycled answerman article and all, that these replies have already been made by other people....but whatever, bear with me.
I think you're... 1. in the minority on this. Fansubbers tend to do what they do based on what people want, due to them talking to fans on IRC and certain forums. Therefore, people are probably requesting (and supporting) fancy fonts. 2. slightly/completely biased since you're writing for ANN, which is wholeheartedly anti-fansub...thus you're obviously going to say you're against whatever fansubbers are doing. Now, I do agree that fonts don't/shouldn't need to be fancy as all hell, but I think they need to be a little better than piss yellow subs.
That point just further proves my point that you're in the minority, as no fansubbers or official releases would do this unless people were supportive of it. |

I dunno. Once again, people are confusing the majority with the most vocal. I'm pretty sure 90% of fans couldn't give a ratass about crazy-fansub-font. The people who aren't fans don't tend to write in saying "Hey, cut that shit out" as much as the people who do like it write in requesting it when it's missing or wanting more. I couldn't care either way, and the majority of people are probably closer to apathy then anything else. |

I don't know, guess it's all who you talk to. I work with a lot of anime fans(we're a nerdy workplace), and they all download fansubs and not a single one of them likes the karaoke, nor do most of them like the overdone fonts sometimes used.
Yeah, fansubbers get info on what people want from IRC's and forums but the ones that would spend their time chatting in those rooms are often the most die-hard and hardcore also so it's not always an accurate assessment of what the majority prefers or wants. It's no different than if you went to a Republicans candidates website and asked people in their forum what they think of the other guy. Numbers also demonstrate that dubs are huge selling points here in the US amongst fans but when you poll the diehards on the forums subs always win out. As someone who has attended forums for years for various fandoms from racing to anime to country music and so on I can tell you with pretty much complete confidence that polls and viewpoints you will get on forums and in chats are greatly skewed towards the diehards and not the casual fans that tend to make up the masses. I'd be very careful using the term "minority" and "majority" to label people when the facts you are using to do so are based on a tally that is completely unrealistic and unscientific. |

@Seif
I'm really not so sure about that. On other forums, I've made threads and polls about it and I have indeed gotten a good amount of "I don't care" responses....but the "i hate piss yellow text with a burning passion" people are still the majority. My point is backed up with generic polls, as well. Sure, that rules out the fans that don't go to forums and sites with generic polls.....but it is more anonymous, so shyer fans will still vote.
Well, how about me saying "the majority of people who go on forums about anime". Better? |

I gotta speak up in defence of sports fans. At least these crazy sports fans aren't delusional. Obviously they are incredibly passionate about sports and take it very seriously and infact take all that to a ridiculous extreme. However, thats still quite a ways from believeing some delusional idea about how you are Naruto or some crap like that. Also, I'll certainly give you that Sports dress-ups are crazier than cosplayers but by the nature of anime's inherent nerdiness cosplay will always be much more geeky. |

For those of us that don't have a good ear for Japanese voices, using a different color font for each character can be a big help for understanding who is saying what. This is particularly useful when a large group are all talking at once. |

I didn't get to see all Answerman columns for this year so thanks for the recap(?).
The otakukin flakes (they were flakes of the week, right?) were so amusing. I liked the Sailormoon fan with the ridiculous name. As for cosplaying, I just cosplayed (to be accurate, costripped - I didn't join the competitions but I wore a costume anyway) for the first time last November 24th. I went as Haruhi Suzumiya. I got a lot of positive comments - People told me I was cute, a lot of people took pictures of me, and people still made fun of me. They had different reasons too - They laughed at the fact that I was the nth Haruhi that day, or that I was too short, or I was an emo Haruhi because I wore checkered vans instead (Forgot to buy shoes ), etc etc But I didn't let them make me feel bad. I'm not cosplaying for anyone, anyway. I just wanted to have fun. Anyway, happy holidays! |
