While acceptance and mainstreaming of anime has indeed become increasingly commonplace, it's still rather shocking to see the New York Times speak of it and of a fairly niche series at that. Still they did pick a great one.

Sold an average of 10k, earned a 8.60 rating on MAL, and suffered a little bit of forgetfulness from the fandom after that since Darling pretty much grabs a ton of attention but now, Sora Yori is being mentioned again, and made it to the New Yorks Times newspaper of all places it could've been! God bless this beautiful anime.

Well, it was without a doubt one of the best shows of the yearly season and anime is fairly mainstream. I mean, nothing new that we end up in the papers, last year's Your Name basically cracked any objection to this, and the streaming numbers for the bigger anime series can compete with anything on TV.
It is however a completely different market, where the internet generation has a higher aptitude for anime in the West, while the legacy media has seemed completely cut off to this generation for a while now. I feel they're very conservative and thus struggle to keep up, and like we've seen several news stories about lately they are evolving to adapt to us, and not the other way around, so if anything this is what to be expected and it's weird it hasn't happened more often already. |

It's a pleasure to see this show get more attention, as I think it's easily one of the best this year. Hopefully we get a physical release soon!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anyway, I was surprise, but also felt happy this anime was mention in the New York Times.  While the anime has not been rank number one the fact Madhouse's show even made it on that list is amazing. I consider A Place Further Than the Universe to be one of the best anime I have ever seen as its themes resonated with my on a deep level and I could relate to one of the characters.

I am wondering that myself, skippy, and I am hoping this would get release soon as well Gurren. It's an anime I feel I definitely need to own a physical copy of. |

Yay, a mainstream recommendation! Couldn't have happened to a nicer show! This was definitely one of my favorites this year! It's a great show!
S0crates, anime movies make critics' lists more easily because they are almost always screened for critics like any other foreign film---Mirai was a New York Times Critics' Pick a couple of weeks ago. TV shows are much less likely to get attention. This is fantastic! |

Isn't it the first time a Japanese TV show is on this kind of list? I mean, I don't recall anything that is Asian in lists of best TV shows written in English. I wonder how Japan looks at this kind of thing: do they list the top anime shows together with live action drama shows or are they strictly "separated but equal"? In Japanese Wikipedia, it is said that there are 3 kinds of "cinema": "movies", "drama" and "anime", so animation is kinda regarded as strictly separate, do they include Miyazaki's movies in "movies" too?
Anyway, A Place Further than the Universe went to places cute Japanese high school girls never have been before: Antarctica and the New York Times.

I still need to finish A Place Further but I enjoyed what I saw of it. But I'm glad to see a wider variety of anime getting positive mainstream media attention. Normally it seems like anime only gets media attention if it's a popular sci-fi or action show, so it's great to see more niche genres like slice of life dramas getting the spotlight.

It's a pleasant surprise for me to see Yorimoi to get recognized by NY Times. Typical Anime storyline being full of Otaku-pandering tropes, it's so nice to see this anime get some recognition from mainstream with their original story.
I already have Japanese blu-ray and got Director Atsuko Ishizuka's autograph on it at Crunchyroll Expo (Personal opinion: she's pretty in person). Surprising thing was that not too many people were lined up her autograph despite No Game, No Life still seems to be popular with fans. |
