A book which is always upside-down, either demonstrating that his book is a total prop, or that he is the kind who unnecessarily shows off reading upside-down. |

I agree with pretty much everything said so far, especially about the MC interacting with the "villains" outside of combat. It's a pretty fun watch and I'm looking forward to all the developments. I'd also recommend anyone that likes this to check out Mizukami's "Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer". It's great and the source of the two figures that Sensei keeps trying to get an upskirt shot on, if you've been wondering about that.
Also, to the reviewer, the main character's name is Souya, not Suyo. Please fix. Last edited by FierceMuffin on Tue Jul 24, 2018 1:31 am; edited 1 time in total |

This is probably the weirdest show of the season, but i'm loving it so far (well, except for the creepy monster babies... )!
Nezuya-senpai has instantly become my favorite character, so i sure hope somebody's (Souya?) going to save him... |

Based on having read several of his manga series (Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer, Sengoku Youko, Spirit Circle), it's easy to get a sense of how Mizukami likes to tell a story. Basically, it never stops unfolding. Every event exists to add a new layer to the theme or complication to the plot. Right up to the finale, new elements add new ways to interpret the story. Don't get me wrong, though - they're also fun and compelling. Sengoku Youko and Lucifer are both solid action adventure romps, even if you ignore the heavier themes. And Spirit Circle is still amazing even if you read it as a series of dramatic vignettes. But at the same time there's always more to read under the surface. I hope you can forgive any fans of the author who are excited for the show. We've been waiting a long time for a Mizukami anime, and even better, it's not an adaptation but an original work. The expectations are high, but there aren't many authors out there in whom I have the same confidence. |

I admit, I wasn't familiar with this guy's work at all (I had heard of Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer, but not often). However, Mother's Basement practically gushed about this anime in his video about which 10 anime he recommends this season and went into detail about the mangaka involved and his work, so I took a chance and picked up the first four volumes of Spirit Circle at my bookstore. Haven't read them just yet, busy week, but I am looking forward to it when I get the time. Sadly, the first few volumes of Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer are OOP, hopefully I'll get lucky and find them at a used bookstore or a con in the future as the third-party sellers' prices are not reasonable at the moment.
Having seen the first two episodes, it's interesting. Obviously I'm not connected to the characters too much yet but as I'm only two episodes in that's fine. The plot set-up is definitely interesting and I do want to see more. |

Here's an interesting detail I've noticed: all of the robots so far, with one exception, line up with the Chinese zodiac. Heck, even the names of the pilots are pretty similar (Nezuya = nezu = rat). And considering the story of the cat not getting into the Zodiac, it's clear this is definitely intentional. Man, I love Mizukami.

You can read them for free legally if you have a crunchyroll subscription. http://www.crunchyroll.com/comics/manga/hoshi-no-samidare-the-lucifer-and-biscuit-hammer/volumes |

Oh cool, thanks, I do have a subscription so that works. While I greatly prefer reading physical copies, I don't mind reading it digitally if that's my only reasonable option for now. Again, thanks for the heads up! |

AH, I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught on to this. After reading Spirit Circle and Lucifer, I'm so glad this guy got his own anime. It's about time. The series so far has felt exactly like Mizukami story wise. The way it's paced, the way it introduces plot points and keeps moving (no long explanations). Simply discussions, actions, and very brief flashbacks. I will still petition a Spirit Circle anime, though. Hopefully this gets his other works adapted. |

This is delightfully weird and fascinating. I have to give special props to the sound artists for the fight scenes. You really feel the impact of the blows and get a sense of the size and weight of the mechs. The deep bass notes add resonance but also make it all seem a little other-worldly, coupled with some of the other sounds they've blended in. It's beautiful.

I sort of passed on this series when going through stuff initially (looked like just another wierd mecha series) but after seeing some people heaping praise on it I decided to check it out and I'm glad I did, definitely one of the more enjoyable series this season.

Terry Pratchett did not invent the Word Turtle. |

Nor did he invent the world turtle. From Pratchett himself, in The Folklore of Discworld:
Also from Pratchett, posted in his Usenet group (alt.fan.pratchett):
The myth mostly existed before Discworld, but it's hard in the modern day to see it set up so specifically without thinking it could be a reference. Also, Mizukami is known to be a fan of both fantasy and absurdist humor, so it's likely that the renowned works of Sir Terry are at least on his radar. ----- Regarding the episode: loved it. Starting the final battle too early is a good twist - it lets everything escalate naturally and leads into whatever the real story is going to be. I've seen a lot of predictions for Soya teaming up with the Paladins to stop the sealing faction, but I could just as easily see Takeshi winning his fight, leading to Soya, the previously defeated Paladins, and the Sealers teaming up against Takeshi's quest to dominate the world. Or some 3rd party might emerge - I'm more than a bit suspicious that we have no character development arcs for Beniko or Yousuke yet. Their role in the plot isn't readily apparent. I can't help but remember that Mizukami has done something like this before. In Sengoku Youko, spoiler[the characters confront the final boss in volume 6, and spend the remaining 11 volumes of the manga dealing with the consequences of their actions]. The unusual story structure worked very well in that manga, so I'm looking forward to what comes next for the Planet With team. |
