Kaede looked like Misaki Taro at first... Damn same-face syndrome.

I love reading Mike's columns. I also learn things that I never knew about and today is no exception. I never knew there were so many anime that were about Soccer. Almost none of these have been licensed or dubbed so that would make sense. It's kind of disappointing that is the case, but I've noticed the same thing happens to most sports anime so it shouldn't be a surprise.

I would not classify Bryan Robson as a steady & consistent manager.

Sports anime in general used to sell absolutely terribly in the US. Even the crazy-popular Free! didn't get a dub or home video release until a little down the line, but was the start of that swimming/volleyball/basketball trifecta of pretty boys that helped start the trend of actually getting licensed sports series sometimes nowadays. On the plus side, a lot of them do get licensed elsewhere in the world. So if you know Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, or French, a large portion of those series Mike mentioned can be watched in a dub other than English. Poland, Germany, Russia, and the Arabic-speaking world got quite a few dubs also. I think I ended up watching the majority of Ganbare, Kickers! as Spain's Supergol.

Manga-wise, I'd like to suggest Sora Ando from Takatoshi Nakamura's 1/11 be included on the list. I really liked the manga - Sora originally played soccer in elementary but quit in HS when his mom told him that he needed to focus on his studies. While on the way home from HS, he runs into the top Japanese female HS player. He wonders why she was able to play with him when she was supposed to be heading to the US to play there. He later finds out that her plane crashed en route and she perished. Sora then vows to return to the sport and become the top player in Japan to live out the dream that she was unable to see.

I was such a sucker for the heart-string pulling SQ Jump stories..
