ADV's release of Martian Successor Nadesico quickly sprang to mind here. Not only was all text thoroughly replaced during the titles, but as much Japanese as possible was airbrushed or permanently overlaid during the episodes. It was as if the goal of the production process was to stretch the use of their editors and typesetters to their feasible maximum. |

Some of us miss hearing 「この番組はご覧のスポンサーの提供でお送りします。」 though. Oh well.

It's always interesting to see what tiny things get changed from company to company. I remember how in the mid-2000's Bandai always kept the original Japanese credits for their DVD releases, at a time when almost every other company would replace them with English credits. Or how certain shows would get the sponsor announcement cards kept in because they were just too cool to remove (like Scryed, which used a unique piece of artwork for each episode, or Inuyasha, where the sponsor announcement happened during the theme song, so Viz kept it in rather than abruptly cut off the music.)

I've noticed Viz sometimes leaves in those blank sponsor messages (like for Sailor Moon Crystal and the Death Note Blu-rays). No idea why.
I actually had no idea the footage still comes from Japan on tape. Always assumed it was a hard drive at this point, or even something cloud-based. |

I remember liking it when Tokyopop's Initial D release kept the blank sponsor cards intact between the OP and the beginning of the show, or maybe it was at the end. Ironic that TP's Initial D DVDs were actually the most authentic to the Japanese broadcast of a show I've ever seen, when their separate dub video track was of course one of the most heavily mutilated anime of the modern era. I think its sponsor cards just re-used stills from the show, but don't other shows occasionally use original artwork? IDK, but it felt like more of a complete presentation with them present. I might get sick of seeing blank sponsor cards constantly for every show though, and having to sit through them once the novelty wore off, so I guess as standard practice I can't complain about them being tossed. |

I don't think they're added by the TV station, but rather the studio themselves or by the distributor who distributes them to the TV stations. What's funny is that, if you ever watch Japanese simulcast website like Abema.tv , you'll noticed that certain anime will still have the sponsor card even though it is blank, nothing is written on it, only the art drawing is shown, and the audio is still playing despite nothing is written. |
