During the ending months of 2006 I began picking up issues of Anime Insider at my local K-Mart and Wal-Mart stores. The last issue I purchased was January's.
Ever since then I simply could not find an issue available! I checked on time and still nothing. This morning I was at K-Mart so I decided to check once again and, of course to my surprise, NOTHING! I'm not sure if there's production issues or if the store simply doesn't carry anime magazines anymore? I noticed the website was last updated in September, two months ago, wouldn't you think AI would want to stay updated? What's everyone's take on this? I personally think the stores simply do not carry the magazine anymore -- it doesn't seem like AI would just drop off the coast of the United States... or does it? |

Ummmm my Borders and barnes and Noble carry them and have for a while. I just got my December issue via my subscription I got as a birthday gift last week. So you just need to look harder.

Yeah, sounds like your local K-Mart quit carrying it. Try a bookstore or grocery store, and if they don't carry it either, maybe you should get a subscription. It'd save you money.
Also, if you want a really good anime rag, you should be reading Protoculture Addicts. ![]() |

I get Anime Insider ( which, by the way I say just get a subscription through someone, it's usually like 20-28 bucks. Then you don;t have to hunt it down ) but I was thinking of also getting either Protoculture Addicts or Newtype.
Anyone have an opinion on which of those two are better/why? |

I used to subscribe to AI, NTUSA and Animerica.
AI seemed is the Highlights for Kids of Anime Magazine. Way too stripped down and juvenile to be appeal to all ages. NTUSA was great until they scrapped the DVD, 80 pages of their mag, and jacked the price up. Animerica was always my favorite, until they were gay and pulled the plug in favor of a frickin girly manga. |

Funny. This never happened to me. Wasn't it only with non-subscribed buyers? And even then, I thought they brought it back. I also never noticed a difference in price. ![]() |

OK, I should've been clearer. A few years back, it was 10 bucks with the DVD. Then they scrapped the DVD (I dont remember if it was also to subscribers), then they put it back, jacked the price up to 13, and cut a good chunk of the Japanese content out. |

Ah, okay, I heard about that. I was under the assumption that you were a subscriber since you said this:
I was wondering if I missed something that happened to subscribers... ![]() |

Partly Right. NTUSA had this "idea" where Store Copies would be devoid of the DVD, and given out as a subscriber-based incentive only. I think in a move to shift more people to subscriptions (which was at an insane $90 per year IIRC, correct me if i'm wrong). Alot of fans protested the move, and in a stroke of pure marketing genius, jacked up the price along with "re-introducing" the DVD. Which was a dumb move on NTUSA part (Or ADV, whom owns NTUSA). I used to buy NTUSA till they did this stupid move. Edited to add: I liked this old ANN thread about the Press release of the "Return" of the DVD. And I never cared for the DVD much in the first place. I just cared about the magazine.

I subscribed to it since I didn't want to drop 13 bucks for an issue. Either they cut the size of the mag when they raised the price, or they did it sometime within the time I had the subscription and I noticed it later, I dont remember. |

People will always complain. If you think it's so expensive, then subscribe. It's much cheaper than going to the store every month and paying more for the same product. |

Most stores also have a display copy so you could look through it and not have to buy it. But then some people will say you're just stealing by reading in the bookstore so maybe you should just steal the copy itself since it's all the same in the end right? And yes, that is sarcasm. |

Some people simply think it's no longer paying a rediculous 13 dollars for a magazine, as well as an equally ridiculous 90 for 12. |

I know you're kidding, but NTUSA is wrapped in plastic. ![]() Edit: Anyway, I'm not going to continue with what would be the 500th version of this debate. Last edited by Aromatic Grass on Tue Dec 04, 2007 5:53 pm; edited 1 time in total |
