An answer to your questions

Quote:
Why is Pipimi!Totoro censored? Is he supposed to look like a ballsack? Regular Totoro doesn't really look like a ballsack, but now that the association is in my head, I can't get rid of it. Thanks Pop Team Epic, this is the brain poison that I crave.

Japanese copyright law is very, VERY strict. Ghibli is one of the strictest when it comes to protecting their property. The mosaic was done in order to make sure the image of Pipimi as Totoro wouldn't raise any red flags and get the episode in trouble. This is actually done quite a bit in anime, with another method being a black bar over the parody character's eyes.

The escalation on that “idol documentary” was fantastic. Also, was Popuko smoking a cigar or a blunt at the beginning there?

It was a cigarette, I believe, because Popuko is wearing the same clothes and hairstyle as idol group Minimoni member Ai Kago, who was removed from her agency and basically had her entire career ruined in 2007 when she was caught smoking underage by the tabloids. This is a reference to that.

My favorite joke so far was the voice recording session for the Generic Fantasy Series #9001, with the crude storyboards, and the voice actors(at least in kayfabe) needing to make things up in response to the girls. Plus the cut away to the voice actors in the studio is great.

Plus this segment is probably the one to best use the show's "spot the differences" format so far.

I was hesitant about repeating half the episode, but I've come to accept it, even though it dares you to watch it again and on the other hand almost mocks you for doing so, like in the third episode where the only other difference between the first and second halves beyond the VAs and the addition of subtitles in the French sequence was changing the order of letters - or perhaps more accurately, syllables -in two words. I appreciate the differences in the delivery between Pipimi and Popuko's male and female VAs.

The varying animation styles between the separately directed segments is one of my favorite parts of the show, even the Bob Epic Team segments. If anything I'd say the Bob Epic Team segments are a visual embodiment of the show itself, using its immense power of creativity for shitposting.

It happened again (in the same day, no less). Why are there two of this same topic in the talkback forum? Not watching this show as well, but I’m pointing this out anyway.

Edit: Too many edits that ultimately were not needed.

Okay so, I haven't watched this yet because it looks awful and sounds awful, yet I also hear it isn't awful by the same people who told me it was? I understand this show isn't like anything else, but all of the talk about it being the anime equivalent of a shitpost doesn't exactly inspire me to watch it just because no other anime is like it.

Can I get a straight answer? All innovative ideas and strangeness aside, is this an enjoyable show to watch or just an anime for trolls?

Clearly some people were responding to Part Two of the review while others are responding to Part One. These parts are bound to prompt very different kinds of discussions, but for the sake of clarity, I'll just combine them into one.

I would say that it is an enjoyable show, but it is very much a show where you either enjoy it or you don't though.

Man, this show is just that nuts, huh? I didn’t check out the review because I wasn’t watching the show, but when I saw two threads of this same topic pop on the talkback forum, I was confused as to why it happened again so I said something because I thought it was a mistake. Guess I have my answer now.

I think censorship like that is often done as a joke rather than actual lawsuit prevention though. Like Gintama censoring Gundams even though both are made by Sunrise.

Isn't that why the first episode of Osomatsu-san was pulled from streaming sites? It was mostly one big idol parody, and was so close to some other existing idol series that they didn't want to get sued.

I saw on another site that people were confused why Pop-chin was allowed to smoke, while Jotaro in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (who was like, 17-18 at the time) had to have the entire lower half of his face blacked out.

Nicely done.

I found the first episode to be a legitimate piece of trash without much redeeming quality and really felt like I've just wasted my time. Episode 2 however, was much much much much better. I was actually enjoying it and finding some of the skits funny/amusing. It does help that by episode 2 it becomes predictable what the differences between the the first and second half, which allows me to skip to that part efficiently and let me essentiallly treat it like a short. I doubt they will follow this formula faithfully the entire way, but for now I found a way that works for me (I haven't seen episode 3).

Speaking of wierd censorship, the version that airs on BS11 has the middle fingers uncensored, while they're censored on TokyoMX, Crunchyroll and HIDIVE.
