Hiya,
I could use a little help, because this is driving me nuts. I'm trying to figure out which release is which for the english dub, to avoid buying the wrong thing, and I keep finding more and more bad, vacant, or misleading info the more I look. Ack. Ok, I see that there's a general listing (but not actually in stock anywhere) for a "full" set, all 36 eps plus extras, on 9 discs. I also see 7 individual volumes for sale, but they don't list # of discs per. Set #1 mentions having two discs in the description, but the very same set only shows 1 disc if you look at the specs on some sites (like Amazon). This has me wondering if some of the volumes were released without the extras, and it also has me wondering if they're even the same discs that come with the full, combined collection. And just to make things even more confusing, I just found another english dub of Macross (yes, SDFM, not Robotech) that claims to be the entire series, dubbed in english, on only 4 DVDs (it does, however, actually say that they're DVD-9s, and I have no idea if the others above are full DVD-9s or the half-sized DVD-5s). This set has an entirely different cover, and it says "English dubbed by FX." You can see this one for yourself [Link Removed ~Zalis] I've found it on a few sites, so I don't think it's a bootleg or anything, but I can't tell if it's the same material, a different dub, or just condensed quality eps sold on the cheap. Anywho, I'm a Macross nut, and I've been waiting on them to finally do an english dub for many years, so now that they're all finally out, I'm dying to start buying 'em, if I can figure out what the heck to buy! Any help figuring this mess out, or any advice, is greatly appreciated. |

FX 4-disc release=bootleg, don't buy it. Please take a look at this link for more info.
9-disc release = AnimEigo release, Japanese w/subtitles, no English dub. It actually is in stock at robotech.com. 7-disc release = ADV release, includes English dub -- the ADV release is the one you want, as it has the faithful dub for the original Macross as opposed to Robotech. |

i have heard that the english dub version( adv,s) removed alot of the sound effects or degraded them( something like that, not to sure) so they could add in the english dub, so if you must have it in english then get ADV's. If subtitles only don't bother you then get animego's. I'll see if I can find a link to the page with all that info I just said.

This is also the restored version. The picture is much much clearer, the colors are much brighter, and the blacks are actually black instead of grey. |

The ADV DVDs are on sale for $9.99 each. I think the sale ends Dec. 2.

Really I hadn't heard that. On the side by side comparison they provide with vol.1 the difference was astounding. Details on ships almost looked as if they were 3D, which was rare for 80's anime. Anyway I really can't say one is better than the other, since I haven't seen the Animego version. But I did think the ADV version was pretty good looking. Also for $40 dollars you will only be able to see the first 12 episodes of the Animego version. Unless you know somewhere they are selling each box set for $13 each. If you do let me know, I might double-dip if it's that cheap. |

I heard the opposite to that actually. Now dargon which one has the restored version you're talking about? Cause if one version if that much better visually then I could care less about if it's dubbed or not. There is a way around the dilemma you know, you can rent a volume of each through Netflix and see which you like better. Assuming they have both versions of course. |

Dunno where the screens are from, but essentially the ADV and Animeigo versions are using the same video restoration that was done back in the early 00's. The difference between the two releases are fairly vast, but not nessecerally in good ways. The audio used on the ADV sets for the Japanese track (not sure if you care or not) is used from a different source than that of Animeigo's DVDs and is of a lower quality. There are different subtitles on each set by different people, from what I can remember.

Ah I see, seems most of the problems have to do with the Japanese language track not being as high a bit rate(or quality), even though ADVs Japanese track still retains original sound effects. It makes no mention of the video being any superior than the other though. Thanks for the link, that must be the deal Zalis116 was talking about.(if you look anywhere else all you will find are the three boxed sets sold separately) Tempting. But to me the audio on both tracks were fine. Still tempting though. |

I own animego's version, I have the original 9 disc box set ( not 3 separate ones) that was apparently a pre order only item, I snagged it on eBay sometime after its release, I find animego's version to be great and is all I could ask for. Keep in mind they no longer have the rights to the series, and these new box sets are made up of there leftovers, so if you fine with subs, this is you last chance to get the best version at the best price.

Thanks for the responses. I'm pretty sure I'll cover my bases and get ADV's English dub set, and then later I'll grab Animeigo's newer Remastered collection, too (remastered video, but otherwise same as the previous black box set, right?).
I am curious if anyone's familiar with the various extras and bonus materials from the Robotech versions. I was a Macross when Robotech first came out, but with anime being such a hard-to-find thing in the states at the time (the wave hadn't hit yet), the concept of what Harmony Gold was doing seemed like the answer to prayer (and it worked, that's for sure). Anyway, I'm gonna eventually buy the newer, remastered Robotech discs in addition to the original Macross stuff, but want to make sure I do it smartly and don't end up skipping any bonus/extra discs. As far as I can tell, the "Protoculture Collection MegaSet" (wasn't there a previous version of the Protoculture set?) would pretty much do the trick on its own, but I'm definitely curious as to whether the Bonus discs from the Legacy collections are entirely the same as in the Protoculture set, or are there any differences? Knowing that would be a great help. |

I also own the Animeigo set, which is great.
My understanding is that the ADV set uses the remastered video that Animeigo produced-- I think they "picked it up" because Animeigo let their liscence run out, or weren't producing anymore copies, or some such thing. As far as I know, they are the same exact video-- which is of excellent quality, considering the state of the original. The Japanese audio is different in the ADV version, as mentioned above, being of lesser quality. Also, Animego's subs, IMO, are great-- multi-colored to make them readable if you have different people talking simultaneously, etc. I think the subs are new for the ADV release, so I can't comment on them. Also, Animeigo's DVD have inserts with interesting, well written additional notes regarding the show-- song lyrics (translated), notes regarding production of the show, details about stuff in specific eps, etc. Interesting and helpful for the fan. I don't think ADV includes these. The ADV release, of course, has the new dub, which is the only real reason to get it, to my understanding. They also re-did the audio, but only for the English track, which is supposed to kick butt. Personally, I listened to the first DVD and wasn't inspired enough to buy a third version of the show-- for nostalgia's sake, the original Robotech dub is great, and the Japanese dub is wonderful already on the Animeigo release. I also liked the boxes and covers of the Animeigo release more-- using actual concept art and line drawings of characters for the covers was simple and classy, to me. Hope that's helpful. |

The thing that interested me about the ADV dub was Mari Iijima voicing Lynn Minmay in the English dub as well as the Japanese dub. That doesn't happen very often.
