Those CG eyes have gotta be the worst design choice I've seen in quite awhile Laughing Your looking into the uncanny valley the entire time with that. Need to see more, but otherwise it looks like it's got the world down.

Was not expecting this today. As a fan of the original material, I've been looking forward to hearing more about this adaptation. Having seen this trailer, I gotta say I'm pretty darn excited.

The Bad: Facial proportions based on '80s anime mapped onto human actors are undeniably weird. But maybe that's the point. She's not human, after all.

The Good: Everything else. Great source material, amazing cast (Christoph Waltz! Jennifer Connelly! Mahershala Ali!) , beautiful artwork, hints of epic action sequences.

Folks... this might just be 'The One'. This might be the live-action adaptation that does its source material justice

For better or for worse, they’ve pretty much faithfully brought her character design to life. Big doe eyes, small mouth, and all.

Other than that, that actually looks pretty cool.

This seems like it could be cool, but that CG face effect is really weird and reminds me of those "cosplay photoshop gone wrong" images. Laughing
But assuming the rest of the movie uses a lot of CG perhaps it won't be as jarring in the final product.

I'll have to agree about the eyes.
But I think its more in the close up shots that makes it unnerving.

But damn...
I think the visual tone was nailed perfectly.

Summer's a long ways off.

Yeah, the anime googly-eyes was an awful choice. I can't even imagine why they thought it was a good idea. I don't think her eyes are ever noted in the series itself to be absurdly, inhumanly huge or anything, so it's not like they're staying faithful to the manga. Also, the music used in the trailer doesn't really fit. It feels like they stuck it in because it's "Battle Angel Alita", and they wanted a song that had the word angel in it.

Overall, it's not looking too good right now.

Never dove much into Battle Angel but Christoph Waltz can get me to watch just about anything alone. That guy is amazing.

And for better or worse, they lifted the design practically right from the page. On one hand it definitely makes her a unique looking movie robot, on the other, it's very off with its jarring contrast.

Maybe it'll all flow better in the final product since this will be a very CGI heavy movie, but some of the scenes make it look like it was completely animated so it makes me wonder why they just didn't go the animated route. But whatevs.

Wow, those eyes are... just the worst. Everything else about this seems actually pretty good, so it's a shame they had to ruin it with the uncanny valley staring me in the face every time she's onscreen. I mean, I get where they were going with that, contrasting her inhuman and human qualities, and making her seem a bit uncanny to everyone else, but it doesn't seem to work in execution. Who knows, though, maybe I'll get used to seeing it over the course of the movie, which would be a real triumph.

The big question is whether the average person watching the trailer will be interested in going to the Alita movie or if they will instead go to superhero movie #253. It didn't have to look generic but there is a reason that motion capture CGI humans didn't become common in movies. I am hoping that I am wrong but my gut reaction to the trailer is that Robert Rodriguez once again made the mistake of making something that he thinks looks cool but that the average person is going to avoid. He has a lot of imagination and that can make for a great movie but that imagination has caused problems with some of his past movies. Granted until the movie comes out it is hard to know how it will turn out but dancing in the uncanny valley is a risky choice.

It actually looks like a wholehearted adaption. Keeping the accurate panel to screen character design at least separates casual character design in Sci-fi.

So are people going bitch about whitewashing again like they did with Ghost in the Shell?

Given that this has been in development since 1995 or so - it's amazing that it's made it this far!

Congratulations to everyone involved!
