Pretty underwhelming for FMA for just earning 264,065,100 yen for it's opening. I hope it will do good outside Japan considering it is one of the most celebrated Shounen franchise worldwide. Considering the amount of promotion WB did, I was disappointed. Hopefully it have a long legs and decent multiplier to earn 1.5B Yen overall. I guess FMA LA is very far from joining the ranks of Kenshin, Death Note and Gintama in terms of commercial success of shonen live action adaptation of Warner Brothers in Japan.

My guess is because, contrary to the others you mentioned, the movie seemed unable to garner the cautious hope the others did - which was eventually rewarded. There were a special amount of people who wanted this movie and it didn't change much with the trailers. There was just too much speculation - plus a lot of people were still recovering from Shingeki. I could be wrong, but I think Gintama drew people in because of the actor, because the trailers looked promising, and eventually positive word of mouth.

The only reason I saw FMA was to get the manga that came with it, otherwise I wouldn't have paid money. At least now I feel justified when I complain about it.

I didn't even know it was in theaters. The effects look like a made-for-tv movie.

Oddly enough, the effects weren't the worst part. For Japanese cinema, it wasn't terrible (though, yes, it would be equal to Hollywood's TV budget now-a-days, I imagine).

Well, at least it took #1. I had no hope for it.
