Media Blasters also explained that it changed Riki's age to 18 "to avoid concerns with the sexual content of the series."

So, he's supposed to be younger? Confused

From what I remember, Riki was originally about 19 or 20 years old in the present day portions, which means he was about 16 or 17 years old when he was first imprisoned. This clip is a flashback to when Riki was first imprisoned, (or at least towards the beginning of it), meaning that present day Riki is now 21 years. I guess. I think they needed to age him up so they could avoid child pornography accusations.

Understandable.

Really those accusations would be thrown around for a fictional work that's completely animation? No irl people. Also for the age of 16 or 17 which is the legal age of consent in a lot of places? I'm not saying it's not creepy or weird, but no one is actually getting hurt and possibly offensive fictional things being not allowed I'd frankly strange to me. I rather be offended by something then have it be censored, but I guess I'm in the minority there. Also for example Seikon No Qwaser within the last couple of years got a blu-ray release, one of the characters that's involved in a lot of the sexual acts in that series is 11.

Lastly for additional context I have never seen this series "Ai No Kusabe" because Yaoi isn't my thing, I only know that my friend said it was to rapey for her. I'm just here because the conversation is interesting, the general conversation of morals and censorship has been taking interesting turns over the years.

Will they really get in legal trouble? If so, I wonder how Funi-CR will deal with Super Lovers.

I am really not too sure if this would be hit by censors? I mean, I can't see a random mom picking this up for her kid or anything, and we're all way too desensitized by anime and its...shenanigans, to care if he's 16 or 27. On the other hand, you can never be too careful; you never know when someone is gonna raise the flag.

Though I have seen this series, and the previous 90s OVAs, and I'll admit I enjoyed the 90s OVAs more. So much melodrama and dumb shit happening for dumb reasons, and it concludes! High risks, high rewards.

Erm, I'm not quite sure if they'd get in that much trouble. They might have done that because they don't want to make anyone too uncomfortable when purchasing it. I don't know who within their target consumer range would be uncomfortable with its subject matter, but eh. Take precautions when you can.

I'm not sure about Super Lovers (haven't seen it) but they might just sub it and leave it as is. Not many American anime companies want to risk a dub for what they see as just smut. But who knows? This dub and Yuri On Ice could be changing things for yaoi in America...

Except Ai no Kusabi isn't pornographic, and Media Blasters knows this since they're giving it a 16+ rating. No one could accuse it of being child pornography when it's not even pornography.

Funimation already announced that it is getting a dub.

It’s been awhile since I saw the OVA so I don't remember the part where they state Riki's age. I have the Media Blasters previous DVD too and can’t remember if they made any changes then.Guess I'll have to check.

To my memory Riki was 15 when he first met Iason which is in the last OVA episode where he solicits Iason for sex. Then about a year or so later Iason kidnaps Riki to take to Eos as a pet. The novels get into how this is very questionable behavior even among Iason’s peers. Even then Riki was seen as likely too old to be a pet, and being from the slums, and the fact that Iason keeps him sexually to himself and for so long (not to mention using another boy the poor “furniture” to help train Riki). Like this is part of why the world in Ai no Kusabi is an extremely messed up place where people go to seek out various pleasures, where the privileged can almost get away with anything so long as business continues as usual and there is huge issues with people’s human rights.

Which, I now realize the summary being used doesn’t really reflect that. Blondies and others who are wealthy enough don’t look to the lower classes for pets. Typical pets are genetically engineered to meet specific requirements of their owners. And the other Blondies treat pets like fancy animals or something to be bred together and be around, pretty to watch for a time, discarded to the pleasure quarters of Midas for the rest of their days. However, Iason got obsessed with Riki and since Iason is above most authority was able to do what he did.

Still awful to sexually enslave anybody and all but, the original really brings the casual topsy-turvy horror of the society.

Wonder why they didn't translate the title? It means "The Fear of Love" right?

Ah the "censorship" I'm talking about is them changing the age of the character. It seems like a form of censorship because the reason for the change is so people don't get offended. To which I say people should learn that it's okay to be offended. Changing an author's work to cater to peole that are easily triggered is frankly nonsense.

If you're talking about the disc you linked, it's sub only.

I was convinced it was going to be dual audio, but I stand corrected.
