Perhaps some 15~20 years ago Kodansha made these English only "sample" books. They were printed in large enough numbers to occasionally end up on auction sites.
An Elf Journey by Masako Sone Hey, Cathy! by Yoko Shoji One Thousand and One Nights in Wonderland by Masako Sone Hello Spank by Shine Takanashi and Shunichi Yukimuro Joe (Ashita no Joe) by Asao Takamori and Tetsuya Chiba The Third Eye by Tezuka Osamu There may be more but I only know of these 6. Thanks for your additions once again. Do you have any link to Rose of Versailles and those sample books? (doesn't have to be Amazon). Can't find anything about them.
I found Golgo 13: The Ivory Connection on Amazon.com and added it to the list. |

bilingual manga
I picked this one up very recently. there are lots of Japanese notes but the majority of the book is the bilingual manga. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People https://www.amazon.com/英語で学ぶ-まんがでわかる7つの習慣/dp/4800262615 |

Thanks again!
Do those sample books perhaps have a ISBN? |

No ISBN. Their presentation is more like American flimsy paper cover comics. Actually, I had been trying to find out this week what year the ISBN system came to Japan. Even if the ISBN system was extant in Japan, these "books" may have been classified more as magazines.
I have 2 copies of a large HC Tezuka Osamu book with many bilingual one panel cartoons and captions. It is called "Tezuka Osamu no subete". (Everything of Tezuka Osamu) I have a printing from 1981, which does not have an ISBN. Then I have the reprinting from 1988 or 1989 which does have an ISBN (4-88653-901-7). No picture but here is a link to the 1981 printing; https://www.amazon.co.jp/手塚治虫のすべて-1981年-手塚-治虫/dp/B000J7S16E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1506086849&sr=8-2&keywords=手塚治虫のすべて It is possible that ISBNs were not assigned all at once. (big publishers first?) Anyway, I imagine that ISBNs must have been introduced to Japan between 1981 and 1988. Incidentally, The Rose of Versailles books predate ISBNs in Japan. They have a code number but from a different system. Incidentally, is your interest to search out and obtain any of these books, or more to create good data for other fans? |

Ah, okay. Interesting. Could you give the numbers of that other system? That could help to find them.
Both. I think it's good to collect this data for other people as I was searching for such list myself. I'm also interesting in obtaining most of the manga in the list. |

I still have a number of these as extras (more than my own copy), from days gone by. Want some help picking up any of them?

I don't remember if I mentioned that I used to sell these kind of
books on line. Though I stopped about 6 years ago, I still have tremendous stock and many others I can still order. On my shelves I now I have these: This group would all be pretty cheap; Adlib Report Hello Guyana Speaking Stealing The Future Seito Shokun - all 4 books Mutant (Makoto Aida) Kashimashi House I don't Like Friday - all 5 HC books Manga - the anthology from 1989 This group is kind of pricey: Rose for Versailles 1 and 2 All of Tezuka Osamu Tales of Shigeru Mizuki Anpanman #1 HC Most of the Kodansha books are still available - except Devilman Many of the other manga are also still available at normal retail prices.
