Quote: | Square Enix plans to release a standalone version of the game with micro-transactions removed sometime after November. |
Would wish more games in a similar position would do this at the end of their online life...
...Too much to ask?

That's what I would like to see as well. Just a good standalone with decent story, battles, etc like a normal game.

SE should learn that F2P on mobile is bad not just because of the business models, but it severely affects the plot, battle system, and story as well. Stick to consoles or smaller but full experiences on mobile with a flat fee or demo and a one time fee for the full game.

I've known Final Fantasy Dimensions for awhile. But this is the very first time I've heard of FF Legends II. Anyone here have experience playing it?
I was really curious about FFD, but back then, I just found it too expensive for what it is. Eventually, I kinda just forgot about it.

Final Fantasy Dimensions (Final Fantasy Legends in Japan) was an excellent throwback to the SNES-era Final Fantasy games. It's sort of a fusion + evolution of the gameplay systems of FFIV and FFV -- it feels like it could have been released back in 1993, between FFV and FFVI. Also, totally worth the $15 pricetag, considering it's a full 60+ hour RPG.
Legends II (which would be Dimensions II if they released it in English) is unfortunately not so much a sequel to Dimensions as it is a loosely-related mobage with typical mobage gameplay -- stamina, sequential battles, gacha. It does have a story (involving time travel), but unlike the far more successful Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, it lacks RPG staples like stat and equipment customization and fully explorable town and dungeons.
Legends II never really had enough interesting stuff going for it to compete with Record Keeper or Brave Exvius, and even after rebranding and relaunching it last year, it never took off, and never even got a Western release. With Mobius and now Dissidia Opera Omnia also competing, it's no surprise that it's finally shutting down.
Interesting that they intend to launch a standalone singleplayer version of the game, though. I wonder if it'll just be the existing game sans microtransactions, or if they'll actually rework it to make it more of a single player RPG like the original. Probably the former, sadly.
It does bode well for how they might handle their other mobile titles when it comes time to shutter them, I suppose.

I'm not sure how much I buy that "repackaged as a single player game" comment. Square Enix previously said the same about Rise of Mana, but more than a year later nothing's surfaced.

Thanks for the insight.
If you put it that way, I get the impression there are different mobile game divisions in SE that are actually kinda competing with each other. We also haven't count unreleased projects and the recent Type Zero-inspired Final Fantasy Awakening.
I really wonder where SE is planning to go with all this.
