Weirdly enough, only the G-Armor didn't make it back into U.C. Gundam. Apparently the preclusion of the Zakrello, Hammer, and other things didn't always mean that they went away unless they were explicitly replaced. Nothing like Sunrise making everything confusing. Otherwise, I fully agree with all of this. The films are a much more succinct intro to everything that still gives you all the charm and gravitas of Gundam without any of the who-diddy that slows down the series. |

The Gundam trilogy box set was the first anime I ever bought on VHS, and it's nice to know that it's back in print.

I'm personally of the opinion that the series is worth watching before the movie, they're great at presenting the story of 0079 but miss out on a lot of the little pieces of character and world building.
As far as this release goes, I'm a bit disappointed they didn't include the notoriously bad dub (with Steve Blum as Char!). Does it include both the theatrical and remastered audio for Japanese, or just the remastered? |

There's a small detriment to compressing the TV series so much in that a sense of the passage of time is lost. That was helpful to the impression that the ersatz crew of the White Base slowly and fitfully develop real camaraderie over the course of a long and difficult journey.
On the other hand, in the short version the Zeons seem much more intent on destroying the White Base (as they say they are) since they quickly get around to throwing a massive amount of robots at it instead of there being a minor skirmish every episode for long stretches. On balance the movies win out even in this minute way. |

Personally, I found the pacing of the Movie Trilogy to drag compared to the TV series especially Soldiers of Sorrow and honestly like the more "goofy" super robot elements that got cut. But then again, I think Gundam is better then less "Real Robot" it tends to be, 0080 aside.

Just the remastered 5.1 track. The original theatrical mono track can only be found on the Japanese Blu-ray set and the Blu-ray set from Anime Limited that was released in France and the UK. The set from Anime Limited is region locked. |

If I may ask, does this entail that the score used for the theatrical run is replaced outright, akin to the international Zeta releases? I remain unsure as to how pervasive the differences are amongst the various iterations of these films. |

The changes are very drastic compared to the international Zeta releases which only had the OP and ED replaced. For the 5.1 track the voice acting and sound effects were completely redone, and music placement has been changed in many scenes. Sadly, the movie is unwatchable for people who prefer dubs like myself. It's bad enough so much is going on to make reading subs a chore but the dub was atrocious, it was like hearing the Star TV dub of the Takara Transformers series. Why they didn't get the Ocean Group VA's to redub it is beyond me.

I'm quite disappointed that they decided to only go with the 5.1 audio instead of using both. I found the changes in audio to be a bit jarring, as I had grown accustomed to the original mono sound arrangement.

It's not too difficult to figure why they didn't redub it: they wouldn't have made their money back. The original TV series didn't do so hot when Bandai Entertainment released it (not that they bothered advertising much), with both attempts at airing it on Cartoon Network pulled before it had a full run. At the same time, it's clear why this new release doesn't include the old dub, as you mentioned, because it's well, well behind the standard of English dubs (especially amusing, as the people who dubbed it went onto some of the most celebrated anime dubs). People see the dated visuals and they balk. It's a very tragic, ageist view, but I think a lot of us, no matter how much we'd like to think we're open to older things, suffer from a little from time to time. I already own these movies via the old Special Edition boxset from over a decade ago, but I may end up double dipping, as these movies are my favorite way to enjoy the original Gundam series' story, and probably are the ur example of how to do good compilation movies. Even Tomino couldn't be bothered to do a competent trilogy for its sequel. |
