Oh, I didn't know this was coming. Great news =) After all this time I'm guessing it's going to be a reboot instead of a continuation?

And just like that, the Fall season just got a whole lot better. I sure hope the new staff can manage to make the new Kino very enjoyable because they have got quite the responsibility to make more of a beloved series by many. Even if it doesn't end up being as good as the original, it'll just make the original shine much more. I also hope that this comments section doesn't get too crazy, though I am preparing for the worst.

While I am interested in seeing more Kino's Journey, I'm not terribly excited by the staff. The director and writer have some good works, but both of their bodies of work seem both mixed and slim. I'm hoping they do a good job but I don't know that I will set my expectations too high. I think at least Aoi Yuuki will do a good job with the role of Kino.

Animating new Material? Or is it going to retread the previous series? Kino's Journey was a surprise hit with me, and I'd really like to see more. But I don't really want to go over the same stories again.

I haven't seen a Fall season this exciting since 2014. Hopefully the new staff will do this justice.

Well, this is coming a lot sooner than I expected. I'm pretty OK with studio Lerche, since I know they can deliver good animation quality. Staff isn't the best, I'm especially worried about the guy in charge of the series composition. The key visual they teased isn't how the character designs will look in the anime, that's only an illustration from the light novels's artist.
Overall, I want more information. Is it a sequel or a reboot, how many episodes?

There are about 20 volumes of stories to choose from, so there's not much need to recycle old material (save perhaps some of the stories of Kino and her teacher Shishio --- origin stories --- though I suspect there's enough material there to not really need much in a repeat.
I'm very happy to see this announcement, and am looking forward to the series in the fall.

Okay, serious question, do people just not care about the gender thing anymore? I distinctly remember getting chastised for not keeping a pronoun gender-neutral in regard to the titular character about a decade ago on this site, and yet, we have 2 articles in a row that don't bother to be careful.

@varmintx
I think Kino's gender is no longer an issue. I haven't even watched the show and I have known about it for years. Even if the article didn't mention it, the art work makes it clear. I doubt you can now be legitimately chastised for mentioning information reveled in an official article.

Honestly, I wasn't even aware it would be considered a spoiler until I went online after I watched the series for the first time. On my first viewing my brain automatically registered Kino as a woman, granted maybe it's more ambiguous in the Japanese language version (like Persona 4 making it pretty obvious regarding one certain character in the English version). To me, it never felt like the show made it a reveal or twist but I guess if people consider it THAT big a deal I'll just keep continue using spoiler tags.

I'm just happy that this title is getting a second life after so many years! As I see it, if the performances and especially the scripts are up to snuff, the show should do just fine.

It was something unexpected to me, in the 2003 series, in that I had incorrectly assumed Kino's gender until the origin episode; but I don't feel it was intended as a reveal/twist.
Technically, there's a clue in an early (maybe the first?) episode when Hermes wonders aloud whether Kino might marry a person they encountered in that episode. How good a clue it is depends on your (or your assumption of the writer's) views regarding "traditional" versus "same sex" marriage. Kino's response (something like "that would be silly") increases the ambiguity, though, since it could mean "because we're the same gender", "because we only just met", "because of the age difference", etc.
----------
Edit: I'm sorry, my memory of episode 1 of the 2003 series is inaccurate. Kino didn't say "that would be silly". Please disregard.
Here is proper dialogue from that scene, from the subtitles of ADV's DVD release:
Code: | HERMES: Kino, you know how you were gazing at each other at the end?
KINO: Huh? Oh, that.
HERMES: Were you all lovey-dovey?
KINO: Huh? What's that about?
HERMES: I was worried there. Watching you two, I thought you were going to marry [that person] or something.
KINO: (laughs) |
Anyway, my point was that IF the writers weren't considering same-sex marriage as a possibility, then Kino's gender is confirmed at the end of episode 1 and, as such, the events of episode 4 (Kino's origin) aren't intended as a reveal/twist.
Interestingly, ADV's English dub doesn't mention "love" or "marriage" in that scene. It would be ironic if the reason for that change was to avoid the suggestion of homosexuality. (Meaning that the dub team either incorrectly assumed Kino's gender themselves, or assumed the audience would.)
