Not too long ago I was into anime pretty hardcore. However, once I started having to save for school and now go to university full-time and work a part-time job to pay for it, now I find it very hard to stay tuned into the latest happenings with anime.
I was talking to my friend the other day who doesn't go to school and he was talking about all of these titles that I had no clue ever existed. I mean I love the fact that anime has really picked up and the variety of it has grown almost exponentially, but now there is almost too much. (I never ever thought I would say that) Does anyone else feel the same way I do? Or is there anyone in my situation? How about anyone who found themselves in my situation and have somehow got back into the anime scene? Any suggestions for getting back into anime and still having enough time for friends, school and work? Please help me... |

Yes, i understand what you are saying. i myself go to work come home, chang and go back to work. Than come home again and sleep. i normally just watch anime on my days off but i try to read a chaptor in manga a night before i go to sleep. It always takes me forever though. i can't wait intell i start school. i'll have no time for anime than or anything really.

The best suggestion would be look at what your tastes are and decide based on that. And if youre really strapped for time just wait. Wait and see what others say about a series and give it a go, because you obviously dont wanna waste time even watching just 1 episode of a crummy series

I know what you mean but it doesn't really bother me if I don't know the latest anime or latest news about anime. I'll find out anyway. All you have to do is check ANN - Read the news they have on the starting page, or check the forums.

Eh. I watch what I feel sounds interesting to me, others do the same. Sometimes, I end up watching the same shows as others I know, sometimes it's totally different. With all the stuff out there that's all you can do. As far as subs go I usually limit myself to only following 3 to 4 at a time.
When I do choose what to watch though I usually go for a good looking Sci-Fi, Mystery, or Action show (preferably something serious) above any other genre because that's just what I know I like. If I'm in the mood I may check out a romance anime or a comedy or something else as well. i download too many fansubs and never watch them. I ended up deleted many of them. There are just too many anime because there are new shows every 3 months.

You can do what I do. Use an online rental company. I'm sure there's gotta be one that mails to Canada. I've probably watched over 150 series and movies in the last two years with Netflix.

Look, it's always been this way, and not just with anime. The world is and has always been an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord of experiences, more rich and varied than any single person (no matter how devoted) could consume.
The best you can hope from life is to sample the world's many pleasures (and pains -- they're part of the adventure, too) before you die. Even if you should live forever, there is no hope of "catching up", because more experiences are being produced than you can possibly hope to take in. This applies to anime as well as to anything else. One of the reasons why people become devoted geeks and specialise in only one type of entertainment (anime, horror movies, film noir, whatever) is that it allows them to get slightly more deeply into their chosen field than they would otherwise be able to -- at the cost of everything else, of course. Even then, though, the solid otakus have no chance of being able to achieve "full coverage". Sound depressing? Maybe it is. But look at it this way: it also means that your experiences are different from everybody else's because it is extremely unlikely that two people will have the exact same portfolio of background knowledge and experiences. That's a positive thing, because if everybody was alike, conversations like these forums would be pointless and boring. - abunai |

I know what it feels like when some of your friends (who are really hardcore otakus) talking about the latest anime and you're just sitting there watching them laugh about something funny. You thought that when you're still out of work you were just like them and you had all the time to watch, read, play anything you want. But this kind of lifestyle is really impossible you really need to find a job and work for about 8-9 hours a day (which before should be devoted only to your hobbies) and by the end of the day you're just too tired to relax and update yourself on what's ever happening on the other side of your world. You just go straight to bed... Quite depressing but I've gotten used to it. Little by little I started to search first for good titles to watch unlike before (anything goes with me). Basically the only thing that made me survive this new lifestyle are the anime fans themselves. Thanks to their effort of fan-subbing I can download the latest and interesting title on the net and the best thing would be getting them from home. Don't worry! You're not alone... hehe ^____^ |

Abunai puts it very nicely. You just can't keep up with everything. I choose to try to keep myself outside of the "latest and greatest" because it'll only be disappointing on how hard it is to keep up to date. I have very open tastes and have wide interests as well. Not only that, I have a perfectionist attitude of all or nothing(example being finishing any anime I've started, regardless if it gets very boring/bad. Of course I do enough homework to stay away from the absolute worst) Depending on your personality, do what my friend does. Limit yourself and force a mild hate for all things out of a few genres, heh. A bit of a "boxed in" feeling but I suppose it works for him since he has much less to worry about. Also, it's getting very annoying seeing playstation 1 games I need to play when the ps3 has already been out for a year. |

I do that all the time and I'm still not able to catch up. Because of that I'm sleepy for most of the day and I end up not watching anime. |

Well you're kind of messing yourself up then! But, it's fun though, right? Who needs sleep, not like simple tasks start to become increasingly harder when you're half dead...
Anyway, to the poster, I guess you just can't always make time for the things you like. I don't work a whole lot, which is good and bad when you're so bored at work. I also don't have a full semester and even then the computer classes I'm taking are beginner level(programming/repair) so it really doesn't require much studying when you already have some knowledge to help you out. Basically, I'm unable to do so much work/school like you because I'm lazy which gives me enough free time to do whatever I like. Not sure what advice can be given other than really work on using all of your time. Maybe get a portable dvd player or some type of video device like a zune/video ipod/psp and rip/encode onto it. Last semester at school I had longer breaks between classes I could've watched anime but not really now. Listen to books on cd in the car. Don't zone out for hours at home! Otherwise, maybe you'll have some more time after you finish school and get a job in the field. I don't know if I could handle such a full schedule of both work and school so, goodluck. |

My one other suggestion is maybe trying to find a DVR. Then you can at least keep up with what's on TV. I have a Panosonic DVR, which is an independant DVR and does not require a monthly fee. But I hear that these are becoming extremely difficult to find and can be quite expensive. It that's the case, the only other DVR available might be Tivo or something through your Cable/Satellite provider.

There's really just so much stuff out there, that it becomes difficult to keep up... Or even catch up with what you missed. I felt exactly the same way earlier this year, but I soon figured that I don't have to know/see EVERYTHING, just the stuff that seems... Interesting.
I can relate to the suggestion to focus on a few specific genres, and avoid most others, since I've unwittingly done it for years. For example, I've completely avoided harem comedy/romances for years (until now), and focused more on mecha (in the late 1990s/early 2000s), and on shoujo slice-of-life romance comedies (now). So while my knowledge and familiarity with some genres is just plain bad, there are some genres that I'm really steeped in. Think of it as going for a bit of extra specialization... Really, time management is key in maintaining ANY hobby without going off the geekiness deep end; which involves spending all your time at home, obsessed with it, and getting bad withdrawal symptoms if kept away from it (speaking from personal experience  ). Just schedule a half-hour to an hour of anime viewing time a day, and just sample the stuff that's out there.
I would laugh... But in fact, I still have some 16-bit generation games on my to-play list, so I know exactly what you mean...

I've got NES games to finish off.  I'd probably have Atari too, if mine wasn't broken.
It's pretty much impossible to balance all levels of geek-dom, or any fandom, equally. It's a simple matter of time- if an RPG takes 40 hours to complete, and I get 10 RPGs for each system I have, and I currently own 7 consoles (not counting handhelds)... that's nearly 4 months of nonstop play time. Play/watch what you like. If you feel out-of-sorts, get a magazine subscription of some kind so you have a passing familiarity with what's out there. Otherwise- relax, or you'll be so busy trying to do it all you'll forget to enjoy any of it. |
